I want to get a dog for my grandparents ranch that they just bought. It has to have a lot of energy and a good personality. Any suggestions?

My grandparents just bought a ranch and they need a energetic dog who will be loyal and loving as well as a good pet. My grandpa goes hunting and fishing are there any dogs that can do it all?

They are working on getting cows, sheep, goats, ducks, pigs, and chickens. My grandpa hunts birds and deer. But mostly pheasent, ducks, and turkey.

Something that points and retrieves like a German Shorthaired or a Visla. You could hunt with a lab, but the way they overbred and inbred these days I wouldn't buy from just anyone. If considering a lab, lease go to a gun dog breeder. Most Labs in the newspapers are worthless for hunting.
Cattle dogs, Border Collies and German Shepherds are NOT hunting dogs. If your grandpa needs a herder, then the cattle dogs or border collies are #1 & 2. You probably won't ever find a dog that both hunts and herds well.

Cattle Dog is a very popular ranch dog... Border Collie... Australian Shepherd... any working/herding type dog would be great..
threw a wrench in it...haha
hunting...what does he hunt? Do they have livestock?
fishing any dog can be a part of
Well... a Brittany Spaniel is a fantastic option...great with hunting all the game you mentioned...except the deer..usually no dogs on deer hunting trips...
in a case where you want a working dog as well as a sporting dog sometimes you need to get one of each... perhaps a dog to be with the livestock..as well as a dog to hunt...
does he need the dog to herd the livestock or guard it? if guarding is his goal than a livestock guardian dog would be a wise choice..

Definitely an Australian Cattle Dog. Great herders, scary smart, energetic to a fault, and loyal to the death. There was one in the papers recently out west who jumped in front of its owner to save him from being bitten by a snake. Dog ended up in a coma. That kind of bravery and loyalty can't be taught.
In the house they are velcro dogs-they like to lay on your lap and are very affectionate.
One word of caution-they can be stubborn, opinionated and difficult to train, so they are not for the first time dog owner or someone who doesn't want to spend the time needed to obedience train them. They are awesome dogs with the right owner.

Any of the working dogs.
I have an Australian Cattle Dog (Blue heeler/Lab mix).
Shepards, collies, labs, are medium to big dogs.
Terrier breeds, are smaller, but don't leave them out, they make great active dogs.
EDIT
Sounds like a Lab would work, but I'm not sure on the fishing part. Labs usually love water, so they would mostly like to be in the water, not sitting quietly in a boat or on the sidelines.

If he wants a dog to hunt with, he should look into a sporting breed. Here is a link to dogs in this group.
http://www.akc.org/breeds/sporting_group.cfm
And if he wants a dog to use for herding, here are the herding breeds. http://www.akc.org/breeds/herding_group.cfm
He could get one dog for each purpose...a hunter won't make the best herder, and a herder isn't the best hunting dog.

We had a border collie/austrailan shepard, he is currently living on a 20 acre ranch where he should have been all along. That mix is the best of the ranch dogs! He is very sweet and very smart.

the standard answer is border collies ,i think labs or Brittanies would be better with the hunting and fishing issues , although Brittanies are highly excitable their generally friendly, both dogs are trainable, lab's are probably better with kids. both breeds generally have good personalities.
