to a very thin-waisted, and athletic looking 185 lbs? That is of course if he cut calories, monitored his diet to eat nutricious, balanced meals, performed 30 minutes of cardio on a tread mill 5 days a week, and lifted light weights/with high reps on 3 of those days. About how long would it take for this 43 year old male with a large frame to achieve such a goal, again, realistically? It should be noted he is 6' 1", has a thick bone structure and a large muscular frame, albeit covered in outer layers of fat. Any other recommendations about diet/exercise for my Uncle Des?

realistically? well 2 or 3 lbs a week is a good goal, he needs to lose 115 lbs..so if he sticks to a good diet of say 1500 calories a day and thirty minutes to an hour of exercise daily, he could lose the weight and tone up in about 40 weeks.

About a year -- it sounds like he would do about 1-2 pounds per week. Losing 105 pounds of fat is a lot. Think of a bag of fat weighing 105 pounds sitting in your kitchen..... ugh.... that's a lot of fat - he is obese by far. That's not a slam, that's a reality. A 6'1 male is obese, typically, at 220 to 230 pounds. He's got 70 to 80 on top of that.....

Coming to grips with the fact that that term applies to a person can make that person highly motivated.

A 6'1" male is overweight even at 195 pounds, unless he has serious muscle. He's 100 pounds past overweight.
