Well, I'd think it would be that gold conducts electricity fairly well, and the electromagnetic field compasses depend on to tell the direction might be thrown off if the compass got charged in some way. A golden compass seems wholly impractical if you ask me.

It is a fictional story. It is an adventure story set in a fictional world that bears some similarities to ours.
At one level it does deal with the doctrine and dogma that churches have produced and the inhumane consequences that many have resulted in.
Some people view it as an attack on their religion. I suspect that most have no idea what the story really is, but are just going on what their pastor/TV evangelist/etc. tells them to think.
Edit:
If you really want to know, go get the book out of the library. THe Golden Compass in the U.S. Northern Lights in the U.K. The follow on books are The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass. They are well written books and worth reading. Whatever religion you are.
BTW for those that claim that, in the books, god is killed just plain have not read the books.

It has undertones of an anti-religious flavour, which is offending anti-secular christians, who have in turn insisted that even non-religious people should not be allowed to see this film.
Apparently parental discretion doesn't enter into it at all.
Basically, it's about an alternate universe where the mediaeval catholic church won the war against science, and all science or innovation is considered heresy.
One child goes on a quest to find her friend and discovers a conspiracy by the church involving separation of children from their "daemons", which are kind of animal versions of a person's soul.
The end result is... God is killed, and shown to be an apathetic, impotent old man.
Ergo, the christian fundamentalist right is kicking up a fuss because they think no-one should be able to see a film about it.

It's the latest nothing that the "Christians" are getting themselves all worked up over. It's their way of showing us that they don't really have values at all - they have issues.
Basically, the film is based on a book in which children "kill God," or something. (I have not read the book.) So "Christians" think that if people go see this movie, it will cause a mass exodus from religion, human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together...mass hysteria.
The atheist heathen gay baby-killer commie pinko might argue that if your faith can't withstand a trip to the movies, then you never really had faith to begin with - but clearly he's deluded by Satan, so just ignore that guy.
Seriously, I was reading where some Catholic leader was saying that this film was just some kind of "trap" to get kids to read the books, which will indoctrinate them into anti-clericalism, etc etc. Pretty much the Harry Potter/Da Vinci Code rap - and we all see how Christianity has crumbled since those books came out.

The Christians think since an Atheist wrote the books that the movie is promoting Atheism and will encourage religious children(Christian kids) to leave their religion and become Atheists so the Christians are trying to ban together and boycott the movie so it will never be shown in theaters.

Since no one has seen it yet, and barely anyone has read the book, I would take any answers to your question with a pinch of salt. It is very loosely based on the book, and in fact early reviewers have said that any anti religious views have been significantly watered down in the movie.
As usual idiot rabid Christians are trying to ban something they are completely and utterly clueless about.

Straight and to the point:
The movie is part 1 out of 3 in which at the end that kids have to kill the Authority figure, which is GOD.
Thats why everybody is so worked up over it.

It's a fantasy film based on a book of fiction.
Since christians can't tell reality from make-believe, they're up in arms about it.
Giving it WAY more free publicity than it ever could have hoped for.

People who haven't read the books think it'll turn their kids into Atheist heathens. God forbid we make movies that have anything other than Christian values in them!
Case in point, cvo's idiotic response below me. Adam and Eve kill God? NONE of what she spouts of is in the books.
