Gnosticism was declared a heresy by the Catholic Church. Gnostics believed that a special knowledge was required to go to heaven. The Catholic Church teaches that God's grace is freely given, no special knowledge required.. A facinating topic..

The Templars were "accused" of worshiping the head of Baphomet. Just look at the name, it is Egyptian. Some think the head that the Templars honored was that of John the Baptist, which fits with some Gnostic sects that taught John the Baptist was the true Messiah and Jesus was the Anti Christ. Other Gnostics combined the teachings of several sources into many individual mystery schools.

"in a few words"?

Gnostic belief was so complicated and difficult to understand, that trained scholars are STILL trying to make sense of their cosmology and worldview. What we DO know about them would take a lot more than "a few words" to discuss. For a brief overview try these texts:

"Lost Christianities" by Bart Erhman
"The Gnostic Gospels" by Elain Pagels

I don't think that's true. The Catholic Church did a lot to demonize the Templars in order to justify their destruction.
