Why a Pitbull versus a Boxer, Bulldog, Bull Terrier, Staffordshire Terrier or any other medium size dog.
Please no responses such as "I liked it's look". A Boxer looks nice too but you didn't get one. A Staffordshire looks a lot like a Pitbull but again you chose a Pitbull. Why?

I didn't really "choose" my APBT. She was a rescue dog.
The woman told a mutual friend that they would kill the dog if they didn't find a home for it by the end of the weekend. He called me, knowing I would take the dog in and care for it til it had another home.....I took the dog.

Once we got her, my "friend" informed me that the dog had been kicked, beaten, abused repeatedly by the "kind lady that didn't want to kill her". *rolls my eyes*
Upon hearing that, I couldn't rehome her. I couldn't let her go. She needed love, affirmative attention and affection and ALOT of time spent with her to teach her she was "a good dog".
She has been a major part of our family for over three years now. She is socialized, mild mannered and very well trained.
She is charasmatic, fun, playful, loving and loyal. She protects this family but doesn't do so over agressively or with servere attitude. She's all around a cool dog.

That's why I have her, that's why I kept her.

I chose an American Pit Bull puppy because it was being thrown away with a box of litter mates because the owner got tired of them and was going to turn them over to the SPCA who told them in advance they would be put down before the people left the door. I got the little weak runt and bottle fed her from two and a half weeks old. I had been a bit leery of bully breeds until this little gem came into my life. What wins me over about this breed is their intelligence, their clownish antics and generous grins, the way they play, sleep, paw, how easy she was to train- though also very strong needing assertive handling.
Since having her, I have gotten to know the breed in general and I am sold on them. They are now my favorite breed of dog. Did you know that some APBT's are also registered as American Staffordshire Terriers?
So my dog sort of chose me as she came across my path, but because of her, I'd get another of this breed without thinking twice about it.

I got my first one through sheer coincidence, she showed up on my doorstep starved down to 18lbs when her normal weight is about 45lbs. I didn't even realize she was an APBT, she was just a starving animal that needed my help so we took her in. She has rewarded that by being THE BEST dog I have ever owned. Her temperament with ALL people is exemplary, I couldn't have designed a better family dog than her. She's my running buddy and cuddle bug, my lap dog and training partner all rolled into one.

On learning her breed, I was a little shocked and kind of worried about what type of animal I had brought into my home but then I got out and started doing some research. Turns out everything I thought I knew was based solely on media hysteria.

She may have been an unplanned accident but she's gone far in changing the minds of multiple people for the better about her breed. I have and will probably always own multiple breeds but there will always be a place in my home for at least one APBT.

They are the most tolerent breed of dog to own. Unlike the misconception, their tolerent level is amazingly high. Check the American Temperment Test statistics, they passed higher than 84% of other breeds. (http://www.atts.org/stats1.html)
They are also more athletic than other dogs, and easy to train.(Obedience,Shutz,Tracking,etc.) They are also very loyal pets, that will be gentle when needed(Playing with kids) and be protective when needed(Intruders, criminals, etc.)
Pitbulls are very unfairly shown in the media. The only reports are when someone is bitten(Usually by a mutt misrepresented as a pitbull) but you never see the cases when they help people,(In Indianapolis, a womans house was broken into by 2 rapist, the pitbull protected her, took many gunshot wounds and still lived!!!!). I challenge anyone to call the news and say someone was bit by a labrador and see how nobody shows up to do a story, then call the same station one week later and say pitbull and watch the vans and helicopters arrive!!!! I have only owned pitbulls, and would never own another breed of dog.

I have 3 pits, 2 of which are littermates. The mom of those two dogs was my first rescue with the shelter I work with. Before rescuing mom, who we named "Honey", I had always been intimidated by these dogs....I judged them just like the rest of the world does. In my mind, they were viscious.

Honey changed all that for me. She had been faught multiple times ( major scarring) was emaciated, had severe bruising (someone was obviously beating her), and was left tied to a tree during a New England winter. Honey's milk was dried, so she couldn't even nurse her 4 pups. Dispite all she went through, Honey was one of the sweetest, most people-friendly dogs I have ever came across. She inspired me to start researching the breed, and soon after that, I fostered her two surviving pups that became my companions, Rocco and Stella.

Once I started researching the breed, I realized how unfairly these dogs are portrayed, and that they soon may face elimination. Since then, I have taken another abandoned pit, Kaleb. My dogs are perfect for me. They suit my lifestyle just beautifully. And, I feel good that I have successfully raised 3 great people-friendly, well-behaved dogs that can serve as an example of the true temperment of the breed. I'm glad to do my part in dispelling the myths.

I have always loved all dogs. But since I was young I have really liked the large/medium sized dogs with a short coat and a big head. I love dogs like American Bulldogs, Rottweilers, Boxers, Pit Bulls etc. But when I started volunteering at an animal shelter, that is when I really fell for the American Pit Bull Terrier. I do think they are absolutely beautiful, but it was their personality that I really fell in love with. We would get abused Pit Bulls come in to the shelter. Sometimes they were neglected and extremely thin, sometimes they were beat by their owners, and some were rescued from fighting rings. There was one Pit Bull who came in who was beat by his owners with a wooden board that had nails sticking out through the end. They were trying to "get him used to the feeling of getting bitten." He had punctures and scars all over his body from this. Even though these dogs were treated so horribly, they were always very sweet, they just want to show you love.

Once I moved into my own house I started looking for my first dog. I had done a lot of research on many different dog breeds, and I had worked with dogs through out my life. I knew what I was looking for, So I started looking in my local animal shelters for Pit Bulls, Boxers, and similar mixed breed dogs. It took me many months to find my perfect dog, and I ended up falling in love with an adult female American Pit Bull Terrier. She was everything I was looking for...Sweet, friendly, quiet, playful but not hyper. SO I adopted her and took her home. I couldn't ask for a better dog. She is absolutely perfect for me.

I saw her picture on the shelter's website & thought she was beautiful. Until I saw her in person, I didn't know she was a pitbull. She is submissive & is a wonderful dog. If she is representative of the breed, I would definitely get another.

I at first wanted a doberman, I grew up with them. well we were looking at dogs my husband and I couldnt agree on what kind of dog we wanted, my husband got a newspaper and saw pit bull puppies for sale, I have a brother in law that had a black and white pit named oreo and he is the most loving and beautiful dog I have ever seen. so I went with my husband to look at the puppies, there were about 3 left and they were next to mom, I took one look at spike and he got me hooked, I fell for him instantly, its not that I just wanted a pit I just got lucky finding him. I even wanted his mom she is beautiful with a great temper, I wanted to meet dad but all the breeder had was a picture of him with papers. I was bumed because I really wanted mom but my hubby wouldnt let me:( so that is how I got spike. I made the right choice he is the best!

Ok I wanted a pitbull because I know a few people who own them and they are sweetest dogs. I did my research before i got one. I read how to train them. I never taken my puppy to training class and he knows alot of the stuff that they would teach them. this breed is very intelligant and they are very easy to teach. Hes not perfect but no dog is. Its all about how they are raised and trained. I know alot of people who look at me because i own a so called " dangerous dog" I love the breed, im glad i chose this breed! Rozko is my buddy,we spend the days playing and taking long walks, and at night time we cuddle.
