In my opinion, there is a leap between what people do believe, and what they say they believe. I would say if someone believes in angels, if someone came up to them glowing and with wings, they would not believe it and would more likely think they were insane or having a trick played on them.

You're painting a charicature of angels. I've seen them. They don't all glow and they don't all have wings. And yes - every priest I know believes in them. Many have had visions of them during mass. As well as demons. Therein is the problem I see.

Many believe in angels, but not their counter parts - the fallen.

Why just a priest ?

I have been in several desperate situations that I should NOT have got out of...and I'm sure a guardian angel was there to keep me safe.

Never saw one, but there's an old truth that goes "there is no such thing as an athiest in a foxhole ...especially when there is 'incoming' " !

The Bible says an angel appeared to Zechariah in the temple to tell him his prayers had been answered and Elizabeth, his wife, would have a child (who grew up to be John the Baptist). He asked for a sign and the angel struck him mute. One interpretation would be, "Look, you got what you prayed for and now you question? What more do you want?" So, I don't think the shock and trouble believing can be limited to our time.

Oh, ye, of little faith! ;)

Every day, people appear to millions in various media claiming that they have all sorts of healing or magical powers, and/or are the wittiest and most urbane person around, and/or have the answers to every conceivable question and problem, and, yet, fortunately, few choose to believe them (it's scary to consider the sanity of ones who do believe!). A healthy dose of skepticism is good.

It's like the old joke about the agnostic who says that he'll believe in G-d when he sees proof, and then a bolt of lightning strikes him down, and a booming voice says, "You should've believed!" ;)

Many traditional Christians believe that the heavens are closed and that such communications from God no longer occur. How that meshes with an eternal and unchanging God I don't understand but there it is.

Depends on the priest.

You're right. There's a huge difference between what people say and what they do or truly think. A priest would probably wet himself or run away.

a more important question would be:

"would the angel take the form of a woman, or that of a naked 10 year old boy?"

If God appeared in the sky, they would say it was a hologram.
