I'm worried my dog might have an ear infection. He's had one ear infection before and I know some symptoms are a smell, discharge, or redness. The only symptoms he has right now is that his ears feel warm to the touch (normal, perhaps?) and he seems to be scratching them slightly more than usual. Am I just being an overconcerned puppy-mother or should I take him to the vet?

Sounds like your worrying too much my dear. Since you know what an ear infection is like then you know from experience when to take your baby to the vets.
Don't sweat it.......unless of course you notice any obvious redness (not from scratching) discharge and the smell, your pup is probably just fine.
But if you are unsure at all, call your vet and ask for advice.

It's good to be concerned puppy-mother. I fear that not enough people are concerned.

The vet can do a test on the ears and give you proper medication. Ear infections are caused by different things and need the proper medications. And not treating them can cause deafness.

I have a cocker spaniel who almost suffers constantly from ear infections. I do not every want another dog that has hairy, ears that hang down and capture moisture inside.

lol

Could be just ear mites they are itchy and cause a lot of discomfort sometimes. Look in there and use some TP on your finger and rub in there to see if you see anything on the TP. You can also put a drip or 2 of mineral oil in the ear and that will help. he could have some irratation outside the ear which made him scratch it. Is he in some kind of discomfort other then the itching? Just watch him and see if there is any worse symptoms. He could of rubbed his head in something when out in the yard or something? Wash the area and clean the ear out the best you can and drip some mineral oil in it and then go from there. Good luck!!!!

Take him to the vet; ear infections are VERY hard to get rid of and can spread. My granddaughter's Cocker Spaniel started with what seemed to be a simple infection...it turned out to be a Staph infection...and spread to his face and neck. It was horrible and he still is missing some hair. Good luck!

Look for mites...wee tiny black bugs that almost look like dirt in the ear. If it's those, you can use mineral oil or even olive oil in the ear to suffocate them as treatment.

Warm ears are pretty normal. So can scratching be.

You can smell yeast as it grows, even in an early infection. Rubbing alcohol will kill it, if you simply clean the ears out with it once a week or so.
