“Your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you." (Genesis 3:16)
“Adam was formed first, then Eve.” (1 Timothy 2:13)
“Let your women keep silent in the churches, for they are not permitted to speak; but they are to be submissive, as the law also says. And if they want to learn something, let them ask their own husbands at home; for it is shameful for women to speak in church.”( Corinthians 14:34-35)
“Let a woman learn in silence with all submission. And I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man, but to be in silence.” (1 Timothy 2:11-12)
Evidently, god does not think very highly of women. Is god misogynistic? Or is it more likely that Yahweh is simply the reification of ancient patriarchal prejudice?
If you are a Christian woman, do you think this is fair?

I fail to see how these things could be 'taken out of context'. It states quite emphatically that women should keep their mouths shut and submit to their husbands.

If the bible isn't the exact word of god but an evolving text, and you can gloss over certain parts because they are no longer applicable or relevant - then on what rationale do you choose? What parts do you ignore and what parts do you abide by? Who is the arbiter? You? Your friend? Your pastor? Your grocer?
Sounds like the bible can be anything you want it to be...

jaantoo1: What you have provided does not contradict the verses above, nor defend them from their inherent prejudice. I never stated that christian men do not love their wives. In fact, I'm sure they do. I'm sure that chauvinists love their wives also, but that does not mean they are any less chauvinistic.

Remember that there several authors involved in writing scripture. Yes, the Bible is definitely inspired by God, but Bible stories were passed down orally through the ages. The writers probably put their own ideas on the text to make it fit better with the culture during the time. It's always good to remember that the Bible is an evolving text and should always be read in a modern context. Keeping women silent in a church these days won't benefit anyone.
I don't think God thinks any less of women, it was just how the Bible ended up being. God has done many wonderful things through the women in the Bible. During the patriarchs, God works through Rebecca instead of Isaac to fulfill his covenant with Abraham.

What does God think of women?? I think He has a deep sense of love, trust and respect for us. He chose women to be the nurturers and the first teachers of His children who He sends to earth. He sent his Son to the world through a woman. He probably could have done it anyway He wanted but he sent the Savior of mankind through a woman. He knew that she would love, protect and teach Him and help Him prepare for his role a Redeemer of the World.
"The hand that rocks to cradle rules the world" gives women more power than anyone else in the world, no matter what their religious job is. He gave men a different role in the church but not one that is more important. Women have the role of molding human lives that reach into the eternities.
How does he see us?? I think he looks at us in awe as he thinks about the strength, devotion and power of righteous women. He sees us through the eyes of eternity and not in the mundane way that the world sees people and things.

if God thinks women are so flawed then maybe he needs to take some of the blame for not making them the way he wanted in the first place, as in a creation that would actually do what he wanted and not listen to a snake. he also could have kept his promise to kill them if they ate the fruit then started over. how hard could that have been? these passages were written by St. Paul who is believed to have been a pedophile, at least a closeted homo. a truly loving deity doesn't treat any one above another but how often in the bible does God pick favorites???

God loves all people, including women, equally.
In heaven there will be neither slave nor free, male nor female for all are equal in the eyes of God.
You are taking your scripture examples out of context and without specific reference for which it was intended. For example in the church in Corinth the women were gossiping a lot and this admonishment was meant just for that group. But as a warning to other groups not to fall into the same bad habits.
cheers.

Christian Women Deserve Honor and Respect
Hemmed in by rabbinic traditions, women living when Jesus was on earth were restricted from serving as legal witnesses. Consider what happened shortly after Jesus was resurrected from the dead on the morning of Nisan 16, 33 C.E. Who would be the first to see the resurrected Jesus and bear witness to other disciples that their Lord had been raised up? It turned out to be the women who had stayed within view of the impalement site until he expired.—Matthew 27:55, 56, 61.

It shows that this was written by an abusive person deep down, a domestic violent piece is clear, the person is a control freak, this is poor mental health.
I bet these are not god's words.

I would think the New Testiment refrences to be reflective of the social norms for their day, and more the expectations of Paul then that of the Lord.
Remember who it was that the resurrected Lord appeared to first -- Mary. My feeling is that he has as high reguard for woman as he does for men. The Lord is no respector of persons.

Misogyny was added by the patriarchal fathers living in the times these messages were received. The Universal Father, in reality, has no flesh, and as such, has no true gender. What the Universal Father has synthesized in us all is a fragment of his personality which permits us consciousness. Regardless of time-space material bodies, our personalities are but a congregation of electrochemical reactions nullifying gender on a spiritual scale. Who was created first becomes irrelevant, as we realize that eternally we are of the same personality origins. The original message was constructed in a manner to properly convey this message to a patriarchal society so that it may not be distorted by those disallowed by society to know such things.

Proof that men and mankind wrote the Bible. If it truly was the word of God you'd expect it to be a little less biased wouldn't you?
