I always tell them to check with their supervisors to see if it is ok to deal with an undischarged bankrupt, if it is, could they call back.

I used to do the same as Des, and say "oh, hang on a min - there is someone at the door, would you mind holding a sec?"
...........and then tootle off for 15 mins or so. I have now contacted a phone preference line, and registered that I do not wish to receive these calls. When I get a call (rarely) now, I ask - very assertively - where they got my number from? This generally scares 'em off.
However - I do feel genuinely feel sorry for kids making a living, but I would rather clean toilets with my tongue than pester the often elderly and most vulnerable folks in society.
There are some jobs you just don't do!

I just hang up on them. I know that sounds rude, but we get 4-5 calls a day starting from 8 am till 10 pm. It's REALLY annoying, and I don't want to deal with it anymore. If the same number calls several times I will ask them nicely not to call again.

the best way is to answer the phone n=and listen to what they say for 10 seconds then excuse your self and ask them to hang on one minute whilst you turn the oven off.
then just return to eating yout tea whilst they hang about for ages on the end of the line with them paying for the call.
you see they work to targets and have to squeeze so many calls in each hour so they absolutely hate this and so delete your number off the system i dont get any sales calls anymore i wonder why?

I just tell them it's a bad time or that I'm not interested; I thank them and say good bye. If they continue to talk after that, I just hang up. I try to always be polite, but if I've said no and you keep on trying to pressure or hard sell me, that goes out the window.

I have Caller ID and an answering machine. I don't answer the phone unless I feel like it. If it"s a 1-800 number without a name I don't pick up the phone because it is usually a telemarketer.

Set your phone message machine to default to a "we are at dinner please call back after..." message.
BTW, it's very appreciative of you to step outside yourself and realize it is indeed "just their jobs" despite how annoying they can be...that way they can at least get commission and such for having made a contact. Also, they most likely will thank you for being so kind about it and not call again as they want to give the same respect to you that you gave to them back.

Just because it rings doesn't mean you have to answer it. If you know you're someone who has to run to the phone every time it rings, turn the ringer off until you're done with your meal.

1) We don't answer the phone during dinner.
2) We tell them politely we're not interested. If that doesn't work, we just hang up.
