I can run on paved roads with no problem but as soon as I get on a treadmill I get shin splints so bad I can hardly walk...why is this?

You may be straining your anterior calve muscles (The ones on the front.) Since you don't have the problem when you run on blacktop, I'd be willing to bet that you aren't using the same type of stride when you run on the treadmill. Follow me on this.

The anterior shin muscles are responsible for raising your toes and foot up. If your heel strikes the ground to hard, it forces your foot down and can stretch the anterior muscles, to which these muscles respond by contracting powerfully. If you do that for a period of 30 minutes, your anterior muscles will get pretty torn up. At the same time, you may be landing on the wrong part of your heal. NORMALLY, you should land on the outside of your heel and then roll inward just a little bit. You don't actually run on the arches of your feet.

I've run into this problem sometimes, and I've always caught myself almost pulling my toes up, which causes the strain on the muscles. The treadmill you are usuing is likely just different enough that it's causing you to make a subtle change in your stride that is causing the pain. Next time you go, really pay attention to how your feet are hitting the platform. Correct that, and I'm sure this will clear up.

Hope this helps.

There are many things that trigger shin splints but the fact is the root cause is weak front leg muscles. The way to correct Shin splints is to strengthen the muscles at the front of the legs. Lie face down in bed with your toes hanging over the edge. Pull your toes upward against the resistance of the mattress. Try to work up to 3 or 4 sets of 5 – 10 reps each.

There are other variations such as standing on your heels and lifting your toes.

Good Luck

You really need to read "Stop Shin Splints" by Gary Buchenic (also available in electronic format here: http://www.shinsplintscure.org ). It's about how to permanently cure your shin splints naturally. Worked for me and for thousands of people. Good luck!

My guess is that the treadmill you are using isnt a really great one, and its on a very small incline instead of being flat. That little bit of incline, when you are constantly running, puts a lot of stress on your shins, and causes the splints.

Usually it goes the other way, but everyone's different. So just run outside.

Are you running on blacktop? That gives more cushioning when you run so it is better for you.

There probably isn't as much cushioning on the tredmill.
