They bring things in like cookies, candy, notepads, small organizers, jam, etc., and the owner of the business wants EVERYTHING given to them!!
Does this happen a lot?
How crappy is it that they do this?

Ok, let me be clear about one thing. These gifts are not bribes! 99% of them are from people we already regularly do business with and have no plans of NOT doing business with.

I understand that he feels entitled to them, but what's the harm in letting the employees have them? It would go a small way toward making up for no raises and consistently groucy managers!

Start telling the vendors you aren't allowed to accept gifts, but they can give it to the owner of the company. Vendors will understand that you're not getting a slice of the pie and will think twice about the gift they give next year. Most vendors will give a bigger, better gift it they think its going to be shared by the whole office. If they know your miserly boss is going to keep it, they'll get him a desk calendar or clock. :)

It happens a lot, it's crappy. The vendors want the whole office to feel the love, not just the owner.
I used to work with a building contractor who was just the opposite. Every bit of food a vendor brought in went to our local Soup Kitchen. The boss made sure we knew who gave us the nice stuff, and then either he or his office manager took it straight to the shelter. We all appreciated his honesty. Maybe you could bring this up to your boss. Suggest it when there are several witnesses, so there's pressure on him to do the sharing thing at holiday time.

My boss would do that too. When something is delivered an he's not around I immediately open it and set it on a desk for all to share. That's how it should be unless the gift is meant for them. I have one vendor that sends a tin of cookies and a gift card for me. I get the gift card and the cookies get opened.

That sucks. I get tons of gifts from vendors, I usually keep the ones that are addressed to me personally and have gift cards etc and share the ones that contain treats with the entire office. If I ate all the chocolate that came my way, I would be 300 lbs.

Depending on the company, the employers may feel that the gifts are actually theirs. They may feel that the money is there's which supports these vendors, so they feel 'entitled' to the gifts.
Sorry, there is really nothing you can do other than go right to the boss and let them know your feelings on the subject.

I only experienced vendors bringing in gifts when I worked in a doctor's office and those drug vendors treat you great! It does seem sucky that your boss takes the stuff away, but maybe he doesn't want your opinions swayed by the gifts? Of course, in that case he could have just told them not to bring the stuff in at all. I guess it just sucks. They could let you keep SOME of it, at least!

A good company shares. And although I am bias, the receptionist especially should always be included! :) Companies normally will open up cookies and put them on the table in the kitchen or up at the front desk....I wonder if your boss is re-gifting all that stuff, he sounds like an a**.

My company does this also, and they re-gift it (to us! and they try to pretend it's from them!) It is crappy to take gifts away, but even worse to try to pretend it's something it isn't. They can't regift with items with vendor logos, but can with food items, candy, etc...... I can understand the sentiment of wanting to share food gift baskets with all employees, but I think it should be "suggested" and optional. It's nice to have a spread in the lunch room of goodies, but again, it should be optional.

Yes, I work on a shipping dock and at Christmas, the trucking companies will bring goodies in for all of us who helped load them and unload them. Our management takes the goodies away and gives them to the office people saying they did the final billing, etc.We have even gotten jackets from the trucking companies, and they are usually confiscated if we don't hide them immediately.

Most companies have a policy of no gifts over a certain amount of money, say $50. Companies feel that it amounts to bribery. I feel cookies are just fine. Your boss is probably keeping it for him/herself.
