If you mean the first few verses, what other option is there? Seriously- people seem to think that evolution is clearly different from this, but I have always been puzzled as to why. The order that things are created in is the same as that which evolutionary biologists teach, so the main difference is that the Bible starts "in the beginning God created..."
This is clearly way outside of the remit of biology, which comes into play when life appears; it is clearly physics. However, there is no teaching of physics that contradicts this; indeed, many physicists, such as Stephen Hawking are willing to consider a creator as a possible, even probable, answer to the question: Why is there something, rather than nothing?
Therefore, whether or not you believe the theory of evolution to be true, there is no reason for that to be the determing factor of whether you become/remain a theist or not. Stephen Jay Gould has stated that he can see that the theory of evolution could fit as easily into a theistic worldview as an atheistic one.

I assume you are talking about the stories about creation even though there is a lot more to the book of Genesis than that. It suggests that you are not really interested in what Christians believe - you really only want to make some sort of point.
There are two creation stories and they were probably written down when the Jews were in captivity in Babylon because they include elements of the Babylonian creation stories.
They express some great truths. They tell us a lot about God and the goodness of creation and the willful disobedience of man.
It is not a scientific essay - I am always surprised that people somehow expect that something written down 2500 years ago should meet modern scientific standards and tests. But it meets the criteria for good scripture. It provides an essential base for the story of Jesus who was and is our way to God.

Define "believe." I believe that God created the world and all the creatures in the world, including humankind. I do NOT believe that it happened the way Genesis says it did -- in fact, the first two chapters of Genesis contain two contradictory versions of how it happened; they obviously cannot both be correct.

Genesis is the story of the RELATIONSHIP between God and God's creation. It is not a history book or a science book.

I don't know.. Take the 3 first chapters.. everything contradicts each other.. which one of the creations do they believe? How can you populate the wold out of 2 people (without serious incest)? how can you believe that the world is only what 7000 years old, when there's SO clear evidence that it's much much older? do they believe that the sun orbits the earth too? isn't it naive tho think that Jahve is more true when any other god? please enlighten me!

There's nothing wrong with the Genesis story in the way that it describes the order of creation, nor the genealogical beginnings of the Jewish people.

Should the question have been "why do they believe the literal scripture of Genesis?"

We believe the book of Genesis because that is the way it happened. The Bible says that is how it happened, that's good enough for me. If you don't believe it, prove it wrong. Remember, the big bang and evolution have something in common, they are both just theories, and not provable.

To be a Christian means you follow Christ how can we not believe the account in Genesis when Jesus himself quotes from them.
You cannot just pick and choose the parts of the bible that make sense to you it is all or nothing

Yes, true and proven like he said....

True and proven, we ask how? They will tell you "the bible says so." The bible saying something, to Christians, means "true and proven."

This is called dogmatic thinking. They believe in something that is false so strongly that they reaffirm their belief with more lies and wrap the lies in a nice circle that makes no sense. Ask a christian why God wanted us to sacrifice a person (Jesus or perfect lamb as he is sometimes referred to) in his name if the Ten Commandments orders us not to kill people? There are many hypocritical points in the bible that christians will refute with lies or the answer that i like the most: "God created earth, he was perfect, he could do as he pleased."

A being who is perfect would not commit hypocracy.

Because it is confirmed by science.

Fourteen specific events in the Genesis account of creation have been identified and studied by scientists. Their conclusion was that all fourteen events had to take place in order for the world as we know it to exist. Not only that, but all fourteen had to occur in EXACTLY the order in which the Genesis account outlines them as having occured.

That's called extra-biblical confirmation.

How about biblical confirmation?

Hundreds of prophecies accurately fulfilled. God gave us His word and sealed it with 100% accurate prophecy as proof that He gave the bible to us. No other "religious" book even attempts this, because they can't. ONLY God can.

Because their St Paul told them 'All scripture is inspired of God and Beneficial', so they are stuck with having to accept all of it, even the patently untrue, silly and downright nasty, including the bits that contradict the other bits.
Except for the bits that the early church edited out. Or the bits that the protestent bible excludes but the Catholic includes, and vice versa!
