depends totally on the person. Some can be treated with medications or just psycothearpy (but sometimes both!) and then they can functions, but others are truely very ill and will need long term care.

Check my profile, I'm considered pretty screwed up, but I'm way better at house hold chores than probably any one else..sick or not, trust me you will not find a thing out of place here. Business stuff I leave to the better half, and as for other stuff, I shower 2-3 times a day, take pride in my house(own a house not an apartment), my pets are my life(2 cats,1 dog), and I've never missed a therapy appointment in 8 months, with my current therapist.. So any more questions?? and yes I have a license and live to drive, I've never been arrested nor charged with ANY criminal offense, we are people too you know..Shawny

to lump all the people with mental disorders into one lump statement like that is unfair, irresponsible and predjudiced. I think perhaps you could use some treatment and direction yourself.
There are many mental health disorders, most of which cause no problem with daily societal functions, and those whose illness do indeed prevent them from full participation do not require such loaded statements about them broadcast thru public forums. Shame on you.

That is not true at all. People with any type of mental or physical disorder can be treated and lead a very normal and productive life.

It depends on the disorder. If someone is harmful to himself or others, he may not be able to care for their own house or participate in normal business dealings.
But I think in many cases, yes, people with mental disorders can live self-sufficient lives.
