If you want a mellow dog I wouldn't go with a dog that has herding instincts like a Border Collie as suggested or a Sheltie though both are extremely smart and loyal! They both need to be exercised daily. No puppy is gong to be mellow at first but many breeds grow into that behavior. Labs and Golden Retrievers get get mellow but they are larger dogs. Our friends had a Cocker Spaniel that turned out pretty mellow. Not too bright, though! You may be better with a Heinz 57 Variety! Good luck.

A Siberian Husky is not for someone without prior dog experience, They are very high-energy(need lots of exercise and love to run), are escape artists and have high prey drive.
If you want a purebred and want a dog similar to a SH- but not as demanding- a Lab would be a good choice. Just make sure you get the dog from a shelter or a responsible breeder and not a pet shop. Pet shops buy from puppy-mills.

You may be happy with a lab, retreiver, beagle or mix of any of these. Sounds like a mature dog is still going to be your best bet as puppies of any breed are seldom mellow. You might want to go to dogbreedinfo.com and do some reading. I would still suggest you contact your local rescues (petfinder.com) and let them help you make a choice that is right for your personality and lifestyle. They have usually worked with the dogs enough to be able to recommend the right match for you and not only are the initial vaccinations and sterilization already done, some do microchipping as well and can tell who the best trainers or obedience classes are in your area (many of them are in foster homes where they have begun the basic commands and house training). You should also get some ongoing support and help with your new friend and any questions you may have. BOL!

There are lots of wonderful dogs and puppies that need homes. Many of them are mixed breeds. Dogs that are mixed often have nice temperaments and they don't have as many of the health problems that purebreeds have.
Maybe you could check out the local animal shelters and fall in love with one of those puppies and dogs. They would be eternally grateful to you if you can give them a loving home.
Which dog you have depends a lot on whether or not you live in a home or an apartment, your lifestyle, how much exercise the dog needs, etc. Good luck finding a canine pal!

Since you're new to dogs, I would urge you to get an adult dog - of mixed parentage - in the medium size range - from your local shelter.
Adult dogs are generally a lot more mellow, have reached their full size (no surprises) and have been around the block enough to know a good thing when they see it - so they have a WHOLE lot of loyalty, love and devotion to offer.
And you will have pretty much skipped the destructive/chewy stage, etc. etc.
Yeah. An adult dog from the shelter - you'll be glad you saved a life.

I was going to jump right in and tell you what I thought, when it occured to me: "Wait a minute....that's only what I think...ME!".......whatever I'M thinking maybe isn't right for YOU.....as you well know, dogs have their very own personalities...same as us....without knowing anything about you, I really wouldn't have ANY idea what kind of dog would be good for you.......so many questions.....do you have a backyard...are there children.....do you have allergies....do you have your own house...on and on.....I think both the owner's personality and the dog's should compliment each other......but I guess it's hard to make a really bad decision when it comes to our little 4 legged friends...they're all great, eh?.....

Boxer - Medium size, strong, good watchdog and great with people unless challenged, little shedding, very fun dogs.
Chow Chow - If trained right, goo dmedium sized watchdog and great with their family. Aloof with strangers though.
Labs and Goldens are good too. Really poor watchdogs but great with people. They do shed a lot.

border collies are the best!
as long as you have the room for them to run, they are fine. VERY MELLOW after they are not puppies anymore, very cuddly, very sweet and extremely great with kids.....they also bark at people who approach the home, so they are good for protection!
