my cousins have a 2 year old yorkie that they were never able to potty train. They basically just use wee wee pads. But they never tried a crate. I think your yorkie can get used to a schedule if you use a crate for when you cant watch him, walk him the same time 3 or 4 times a day, and reward him when he goes outside. Usually in a short time you wont need to put him in the crate anymore and he'll just know to hold it until the walk times.

get yourself a book on housebreaking puppies from your favorite pet store.

At 4 months he's not going to be potty trained, you start working with them now and by around 9-10 months old, they should be completely housebroken (very few to no accidents by that age)

After you feed him, about 15-20 minutes after he eats, take him out. let him wander around. If he doesn't go, take him back inside and watch him carefully. If you notice him sniffing around, he's probably looking for a place to go, take him out again. Praise him for going. Do not scold when he has an accident--all this will do is make him hide it next time.

When he's home alone, keep him confined to one area, such as the bathroom or laundry room. Have a bed and water in one area and paper or an old towel at the opposite end from the water and bed. Tell him that is where he goes potty--or whatever word you want to use that will be the potty command. When you come home and see he went where you wanted him to go, praise him.

A lot of this is repetition and being consistent.

Ok, so I totally had this same problem with our Yorkie. I would recommend getting some puppy pads to start with. The dog will start to use them instead of the floor. I would also get a crate and keep the dog locked in it. I know it sounds cruel, and they definitely don't like it at first (will probably yelp), but it works!! We kept ours locked in her crate and took her out only to go outside. She finally went outside after we started crate training. They catch on really fast and eventually you can lessen the time in the crate. Good Luck!! It's a battle, takes forever. Mine is almost a year and a half and she still has occassional accidents.

The crate is not going to coach the canine itself. The inspiration is by means of a blend of crating and one hundred% regular supervision there may be not ever an opportunity for the canine to have an in-door accident. You're falling short to your training. The canine does now not totally have an understanding of the rules yet however gets adequate freedom to make bad choices. Not ever scold a canine for peeing or pooping in the residence. It makes them center of attention on the truth that you are giving the accident plenty of awareness however they do not wholly recognize why. It causes confusion, and places it of their head that there is also some scenario in which peeing within probably ok. Any time you in finding an accident do away with the dog from the room so he can't see you select it up and then easy it and move on. People swear that scolding sticking their nostril in it and punishment works, but it really would not. Where proper condominium-breaking can also be entire in 4-6 weeks give or take, it's longer and harder this fashion and it can be damaging to your relationship along with your dog. Over time the dog regularly learns, through experimenting with one within accident at a time, that you just on the whole appear unhappy about it at any time when it happens. But alot of these kinds of puppies deal with occasional slip-u.S.Well into maturity. Do many of those dogs eventually determine things out for themselves regardless of these techniques? Definite. However in general best after months of frustration and unnecessary stress over having to maintain bullying strategies without working out why.

You just need to keep at it.

It might help if you try to take her out when he is most likely to need to toilet, eg first thing in the morning, after eating, etc.

You could stay out there as long as it takes for him to go. Otherwise give her 10 minutes and if he hasn't gone, bring him back in but take him out again 10 minutes later.

Every time he goes potty outside give him lots of praise and maybe a small treat.

(If the dog likes being outside, do not bring him in immediately after toileting - or he may learn to hold it to stay out longer!)

While he is indoors you need to supervise him. When you see him about to go, quickly interupt imr (preferably before he starts) and take him straight outside. Praise him if he does it when he gets out there.

Make sure you clean up any accidents thoroughly. Dogs will go in the same place if they can still smell it.

Is it possible this dog was punished in an attempt to house train?
It sounds like he is afraid to potty in front of you. This may take time to overcome, but in the meantime do not physically punish or even yell at the dog for accidents, as you will just make him more scared.

Good luck!

Okay, do you have a crate? If not get one. Its not cruel, dogs like them. anyway, keep your puppy in there for most of the time. Depending on how old your puppy is, it will be longer or shorter. Then, put your puppy on a leash, and take it out side. Then wait for it to do its buisness. If it doesn't, back in the crate. Its not a punishment, but your puppy won't goif its inside its safe place, or crate. Then in about fifteen minutes, take it out side. When if it goes to the bathroom, (the first time, or later on) take it inside and play with it. Don't play with your puppy if it hasn't gone!! This is the quickest way to an accident. What you want to do is inforce that it ONLY goes out side. Hope this helps.

Go to a craft store and buy some jingle bells. Tie them to a string, then tie them to the door that you use to take the dog out. Whenever you let the pup out, ring the bells before you open the door. make sure the pup sees you do it. After a little time (after the pup gets used to you ringing the bells, and begins to think the bells must be rung to open the door), start encouraging the pup to ring the bells himself. You may need to pick to pup up yourself and bat the bells with his paws. Keep doing this. Keep encouraging. Eventually, the pup will learn to ring the bells to go outside. Keep a leash by the door and keep your ears open. When the dog begins ringing the bells, it can be hard to hear. As soon as you hear them, run to the door, and slip on the leash, and open the door RIGHT AWAY so the dog associated him ringing the bells and going outside. Best training tool I ever learned... and it impresses guests, too.

When he starts to potty in the garage - pick him up immediately and take him outside to finish. When he finishes, praise him and give treats. Eventually he'll make the connection that potty-ing outside results in love, attention and treats.

And, whatever you do, if he does go in the house, DONT rub his nose in it. Besides being disgusting, it will NOT teach your dog anything about potty training.

get a crate and when you take him out give him 5 minutes to go. give the command "go potty" if he does not go, put him back in the crate for an hour. repeat the process till he makes the association. reward with praise when he goes on command.
