I'm honestly a normal girl, im attractive and in shape, but i go to a small art school in a large city, (philadelphia) and am finding it hard to make a solid group of friends who want to go out and have a good time. my friends at school are ok, but none of them ever want to be bothered to do anything, or dont live close to me, as most of us dont drive, or are busy. how would i go about finding friends who want to go to shows, bars, movies, dinners, etc. im not really the party type which is a problem, im content to sit inside and draw, read and watch movies. but i do love going out. i have awesome friends in virginia, but i live in pa, so ! haha. what can i do? i kinda want a job, but its really hard being in school and working. i barely finish my projects now. so that might be out of the question.

One of the great ways I've found to meet people is through volunteering. (as corny as that sounds). There's is an organization local to my area specifically for single volunteers. Also, just doing activities that you love, then you can meet people who have similar interests. Don't be afraid to take the initiative. If you see someone that seems interesting, ask them to hang out some time!

You're in a terrific city in which to meet interesting and nice new people who share your interests. I love visiting Philly and working in the archives and museums there, or going to the anthropolgical collection at the University.

You might try just hanging out a bit at the Franklin Institute, the art museum, the Independence Seaport Museum, the Independence Square exhibits, Ben Franklin's house and old print shop, the City Tavern (don't need to DRINK there), or the University's outsanding museums. You'll meet strangers who like what you do, in fairly safe and comfortable settings, and as long as you are careful can become acquainted with many lovely people. I did.

If you want to spend a little time away from home and studies, volunteer at one of those places - for example, the Seaport Museum would be thrilled to get your help as a volunteer assistant curator for their collection.

(Be sure to take a GOOD look at the incredible sculpture honoring the irish immigrants who came fleeing the Potato Famine, too! And tour the USS Olympia, what a marvelous thing it has been preserved!)

Volunteering gives you a chance to meet artists and those concerned with presenting and preserving art. The institutions ALL have good parties, not the kind you attend with your fellow students, but nice gatherings where you'll meet still more nifty folk.

Get out a little bit, and discover yourself and new folk!

There are two websites you should have a look at:
1. This website discusses how to meet people and where to meet people. Meeting people is a skill and skills take time and practice to develop. This website gives some tips about how to do that:
http://www.meet-people.ws/

2. This website is more or less a list of the top ten ways to meet people:
http://www.squidoo.com/meet-people

You will see that some ideas discussed above (like Volunteering) are mentioned. But also some others such as social activity organizations, websites like meetup.com and taking workshops are discussed as well.

I think that if you review these two websites, you will get some good ideas.

Best thing is to do them by yourself and meet people while your out if the ones you know don't want to. Philly is a great place to dine and see shows I live like 20 minutes from there in a suburb of philly and when I go out it's to Philly mostly. I do south street and stuff like that but now it's a little to cold to be there. Just go to the bars that have college kids and meet other people outside of school....I have learned to do allot myself and only have a few friends that I hang with.
