Did anyone who hates an entire group of people based on news stories ever go and get the right information for themselves? I mean, not just watching a computer screen, I am talking about getting to know people and going places you have heard about?
Well, I'm a stubborn person and I'm also a determined person. I don't give up. I can't, it's not in my blood. I just came back from Pakistan. I was there since October 8th. I went for many reasons, but the main ones were to show that it's not what the news says it is. I was there when Emergency rule was imposed, and you know something? The people just went about their daily routines. They did their grocery shopping, they had their outings, and didn't think twice about this American woman. As a matter of fact, many of them gave me gifts and wanted to know more about our country. They have the impression from CNN that we as a country hate all of them. This is what our news shows. Have you ever done something to prove a point?

#1 - the news coverage has shown what you have said - that most people go about their business, which is really all the choice they have. The negative impact of the draconian measures was on people opposing the President. Though a minority, it still amounts to an unacceptable level of mistreatment. But in no case did anyone in America (except maybe a few lunatics) dislike - let alone Hate - Pakistani people and no media (CNN included) gives that impression, and I doubt that any significant fraction of the Pakistani people have that impression. And developing short-term "relationships" doesn't give you the right to claim representation of the majority of Pakistani's, either. Do you really think you got the 100% true assessment of the deeply held beliefs of those you came in contact with?

Uh, just what's the point of HAVING the news media if everyone "goes and gets the right information for themselves"?
If you'll stop and think about it for a moment, its just not practical (and likely not even possible) for everyone to go and get to know the people heard about.
Imagine a few BILLION people showing up in Sudan to check out the Gibbons story.
Or a few BILLION showing up in Saudi to check out the rape victim story.
Since you've been to Pakistan AND you're a biased observer, what credibility do you bring to the table? What point, exactly, did you prove?
Just curious.

Anyone that hates an entire group of people is a bigot. Bigots are not known for researching facts. Prejudice is an ugly thing..Don't expect them "to go and get the right information for themselves"

Hey...I reserve my right to mindlessly hate entire groups of people for no rational reason whatsoever (i.e. The French...).
Anyway, that is very reassuring to hear that those countries are far tamer than we are led to believe. I can't believe that they think that we hate them due to our news broadcasts....when most Americans are under the impression that a large percentage of Middle Eastern hate us! A beautiful misunderstanding right there...

The news is just the blind leading the blind, you're right people should experience life first hand and not be so nieve as to believe what the news or other people tell them.

take for instance the dictatorship(evil) called N. Korea
people get up every morning and do the same normal
things we do here in america...
I.E
shower
eat breakfast
go to work
kiss thier children
go to the store
doesn't mean i'm gonna like N. korea though...
i do admire your bravery(foolishness?) :) of going to old

Wow. I have gotten to know some Middle Easterners here at my college who are coming here. They're not angry or any other stereotype. They're just normal people.
