There are several different surgical procedures that are used, depending on the cause, and the severity of disc or bone degeneration.

The simplest procedure is to enlargen the hole where the nerve passes through. This procedure might keep you at home for up to a week after surgery, and require another week or two before resuming normal activities.

More complicated procedures involve grafting a piece of bone onto the spine, spinal fusion, or insertion of an artificial material. All of these are major surgery that can keep you in the hospital for a few days, followed by recovery periods of up to 6 weeks before resuming normal activities, and several additional months for physical therapy.
