It doesn't matter since you should rotate the roasting pan a couple times (or at least once) during the cooking process. This ensures even cooking.

You want to place the head end first and bake breast-side down for ¾ of the total cooking time. Turn breast side up for the last ¼ of the time, for a much more juicy bird.

I always put the turkey in sideways so I can see what is going on then turn it round half way through. Sideways works for me !
