Because the Christians needed an element of fear to spread their hate mongering (a.k.a. the word of Christ) and subdue uneducated individuals into mindless slavery.

Hell would be the 'name' no matter what it is. We no very little about it except that it is eternal and painful. But that could be anything. The essential pain is the realization that what would utterly fulfill you, you spurned. So don't get hung up on a word. Or taken in by Dante's cinematography. He is only illustrating certain things, like that you are punished by the things in which you sinned, that you aren't made bettter by having company (how many times have you heard people joke that "at least I'll have company"). The company will be part of the punishment.

The Bible teaches that at the end of the world all the wicked will come under eternal punishment in a place called Hell, and this time may be very near. There is much Biblical evidence that points to the fall of 2011 as the end of the world.

And the angel which I saw stand upon the sea and upon the earth lifted up his hand to heaven, And sware by him that liveth for ever and ever, who created heaven, and the things that therein are, and the earth, and the things that therein are, and the sea, and the things which are therein, that there should be TIME NO LONGER:
But in the days of the voice of the seventh angel, when he shall begin to sound, the mystery of God should be finished, as he hath declared to his servants the prophets. Revelation 10:5-7

Apparently God has a short fuse. Even Jesus Christ cursed a fig tree which had no fruit when he was hungry. Jesus Christ killed the barren fig tree.
Other Gods with short fuses include Egyptian Gods, Greek Gods, Roman Gods, and a number of politicians today...oops...did I leave out Homer Simpson?

Hell is spending the eternity seperated from God. Which if you don't believe in the sacrifice that Jesus did for all of man knid then you make that choice. He doesn't force anyone into believing. If you don't want to be with Him than He honor your choice.

I've always wondered that myself. How a loving God can send unbelievers to burn forever in a hotter than hot lake of fire. We must not realize the true consequences of sin. How evil and repulsive it must be to God. I don't think it is something we can really fathom in this life.

I believe Hell is spending an eternity separated from God. WE CHOSEin this life whether to walk with God or separate ourselves from him. The afterlife is simply a continuation of our choice in this life.

For his personal pleasure! It's part of the design of the universe that he created!
By believing in Jesus and being “saved” you will get one of the first seats in Heaven to watch how the vast majority of the human beings including your “unsaved” family members and old acquaintances will be tormented in a sulfuric Hell fire lake or what have you for ever and ever and you will be encouraged to poke fun showing a wet big finger for them to lick and tease them all you want for ever and ever… That’s HEAVEN! No wonder Jesus said that you must hate your father and your mother and everybody else to follow him, especially if they are "unsaved" and go to HELL! You will hear a lot of “I told you so…” from Sweet Jesus! He thought of everything!
Luke 16:23-25-NIV (Jesus is telling us…) AND BEING IN TORMENTS IN HELL, he* (*a rich man in Hell) lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. “Then he cried and said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; FOR I AM TORMENTED IN THIS FLAME.’(and Jesus all excited continues the story telling…) But Abraham said, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted and YOU ARE TORMENTED! (Hey, these are words of Sweet Jesus… he will enjoy watching the Christians teasing those in HELL!)
Revelation 14:10-11 "he, too, will drink of the wine of God's fury, which has been poured full strength into the cup of his wrath. HE WILL BE TORMENTED WITH BURNING SULFUR in the presence of the holy angels and of the LAMB* (*aka God the Son Jesus Christ, and some Christians who will ALWAYS be with him wherever he goes/John 17:24). And the smoke of their torment rises FOR EVER AND EVER. There is no rest day or night for those who worship the beast and his image, or for anyone who receives the mark of his name."

You have a hollywood view of the Hebrew Scriptures. Hel is the daughter of Loki, (norse mythology).
Eternal life or eternal death. In a nutshell, that's the offer. Which one would you like? Shalom.
