No life is a waste. We all waste time on things of little importance. Of course all the energy you put into preparing for an afterlife would have been wasted, but not your whole life.

What I hope is that people who believe in an afterlife live their lives to the fullest because they recognize the opportunity, rather than just preparing for the afterlife. I think people can be prepared for an afterlife, while not wasting life by living only for the afterlife.

It all depends on how you prepare for the afterlife, I guess, but still no life is wasted.

No, because the life and legacy we leave behind doesnt lose any meaning. We will still be remembered as a good person with good character and morals, we just wont be in heaven....or anywhere else. Like I've said before, its a win/win situation. As a Christian we do not spend time "preparing" for the afterlife, rather we spend our time seeking God which grants us peace and strength to face the tough times in life. I like to look at my Christian walk as more preparing for the battles of THIS life and then when I die and go to Heaven, I'll get to relax knowing I prepared well for my time on Earth. Its actually the opposite of how you described it, and that is the most common misconception leading to the logic of non-believing individuals.

It depends on what you mean by preparing for the afterlife. If you live your life trying to be the best person you can be, treating others with respect, giving to charity, trying not to steal, lie, kill people, etc. etc. then no, I wouldn't consider that a waste, simply for all the good you've done while living.

But when you oppress yourself by following a bunch of rules like "dancing is sinful" or "no alcohol allowed or you're going to hell" etc. etc. that's just plain old silly.

My motto is, enjoy the life you have, be the best person you can be and don't live in FEAR.

Hope that helps.

I'm not sure.

I think it depends on the preparation.

I know allot of Christians that gain great meaning and purpose from life, trying to obtain everlasting life. It gives them a sense of safety and causes many of them to be better to those around them. In that case, I think it isn't a wasted life considering the life that was led was productive and helpful to others.

There are other religious people however that use their preparations for the afterlife as a reason to hurt others, take away their freedom, and cause arguments. These people are clearly wasting their lives and worse yet, hurting the lives of others in their striving to obtain paradise.

I guess we could lump Atheists in the same groups, if I as an Atheist use my belief to hurt others then I am wasting my life. If I use it to try and help others, then its a life well lived.

NO, it is not wasted! Not in my view, eleventy. This life is incredibly important, but it is just the beginning of a transformation. William Blake (who could hardly be called a religious fundie) said "And we are put on earth a little space, that we may learn to bear the beams of love." This life is just baby steps for what is to come. Why would I think a life spent learning to show compassion, touching just the outskirts of wonder and joy, is wasted? If, when I die, there is no heaven or hell, there will be no bitterness in my soul for the time spent preparing for heaven.

There is no afterlife and people who mess about making preparations for one waste not only their own time but waste everyone else's time also.

"I find it in a way to be wasted life when one puts such focus on an afterlife. I hope to spend my life seeking happiness and improving anything I can- myself, others, society, etc" I find it interesting that some would believe following a religious life is void of happiness & improvement. Its quite the contrary, but as per your beliefs I suppose you wouldn't agree. Yes I believe my actions and intentions in this life will determine my place in the hereafter. do'h!

Let's go with no on this one, saying yes is just so obvious... If the preparation has meaning in this life, then it's not wasted. If you build a pyramid, that's pretty much a waste of resources, but if you "prepare" by trying to help as many others as you can, it's really not wasted, no matter where you end up,

The kingdom of heaven starts within. So even if I do not go to heaven because of lack of such a place I will not feel as though I have wasted my time as I have had peace in my life on this earth. Not to mention that if there is nothing beyond this life we wont know it anyway as we will be dead. So either way it is fine. But since I do believe I have something that you do not. That is hope for something better, and who wouldn't want that?

I know there is an afterlife but for the sake of argument what is wasted by helping to feed and clothe the poor?
