Good Question! my Mother is like this....i just point out to her that God does not test us, but that He allows things to happen to us for a reason and that "God uses all things to the good"-book of Romans; i believe that positive thinking NO MATTER WHAT RELIGION OR NON YOU ARE can move mountains. Then, whatever it is that she's whining about, I ask her has she used the common sense God has given her to figure out (whatever is going on) a solution...

If the person is doing good in the world, and the hardships result from their efforts, that might not be bad. But, if they are abusing themselves, thus deminishing their value to others and themselves, then it is not so good. It is of great value to have a good cause in life to contribute positively to humanity. One must eat healthy, exercise, and meditate/pray to keep oneself strong of mind, body, and spirit. You can try to reason with this person, on what would be more effective for their wellbeing. Maybe something will stick with them, just do your best and hope.

Maybe you can work with their belief to convince them to help themselves. If god were testing them, surely the point would be for them to overcome the challenge and therefore pass the test.

Show them how a certain hardship was directly caused by their actions.
car breaks down- they never changed the oil.
its cold outside- they don't have a warm enough coat on
lost their job- they were slacking off
etc...

Leave them to enjoy their misery. They won't thank you even if you do manage to convince them. They like feeling like a martyr. It gives meaning to a life and existence that is otherwise without meaning,

Very good question - it's very hard and takes a lot of work.
Just try to find something to "choke them up" - that they can not find a reasonable solution/answer to - then make your move with other questions and statements to make them think.
make sure they feel like you are just trying to improve their mindset and not trying to push your feelings on them, just want them to think a little.
that's what works for me anyways!

Ahhh....I've seen a fair number of "professional victims" in my time. Why do people waste their only life this way?
