Allah listens to and hears ALL prayers. He says so in The Qur'an. Sometimes, He answers prayers and sometimes He doesn't. Sometimes, He answers prayers in a way that is unexpected. Sometimes the prayer of a little girl isn't answered until forty years later. When I was a little girl I prayed for a God-fearing man who loves Allah and who Allah loves... to marry me. Perhaps, that prayer is in the process of being answered. Allah knows best.
How do you know if God will answer your prayer? You don't unless what you asked for came to you. Prayer is not just for asking for things... it is for getting closer to Allah and worshipping The One who created you and is sustaining you. Does Allah like for His slaves to ask things from Him? Yes, He does! Going to Him in prayer for help and other things is an act of one who knows that he is dependent upon his Creator and Allah loves it for His slaves to acknowledge their dependence upon Him.

when u pray u have to go along with what u pray for --like if you say i want to stop doing this or that u have to stop and work along with your prayers -get it -god listen to prayers but not all they have to be prayers that are within his will like you cant ask to hit for amillion dollars --you see you will know when he answers yor prayers because u see his blessings like im writeing this to u now it mihgt be something u prayed about before and now u might be getting a answer to one of your questions--but god is here for you if u ask to get to know him you will if that what you honestly want--

Did you know I'm off to look for the troll who lives in a hole tomorrow, and the big bad wolf the day after that, and then the wizard Gandalf, and then Azlan the lion. Then to top it all I'm going to take a degree in theology.

The personal experiences you describe happens to those who are more closer to Allah then ordinary folks who quickly perform duty of Salat without having their mind totally with Allah. This is sign of good level of Eiman. May Allah grant you more closeness to Him. Don’t worry! you are on the right track.
True it is like our phone call gets the connection and God is there on other end or not.
If you know the meanings of words you are speaking from the Divine Revelation being fully concious and with complete concentration to God, you will have several signs to know God has listened to you.
1. Your hair on your hands and body wll rise
2. A wave will start from your head going downward through
your body and your body shivers a second with the wave
3. Then tears flow from your eyes then you are certain God has was near you and has heard you. It happens to me some times when I pray with complete concentration towards God during my prayers and not always. Only Prophets of God can always have connection with God.
If you did your prayer with mind absent some where else, and you don't feel none of the above then you should realize
that you didn't have connection with God. This happens to more often to all of us.
Getting connection with God is like swimming aginst the flow of river water. You go few feets and then current pushes you back where you started. Then you try again harded and go few feet and current again pushes you back . As you practice a lot and get stronger muscles, you can go farther distance. Getting connection with God also need constant practice.
God commanded Prophet Mohammad to spend early morning hours in prayers to strengthen himself spiritually.
Prophet prayed to God about 1/3rd night time after midnight with God until dawn time. Lots of Muslims do the same after forties to strengthen their spirituality to get closer to God.
Here is the Surah in which God spoke to Prophet Mohammad to pray to God in those morning hours after midnight,

Sura #73 | Makkah
1 O thou folded in garments!
2 Stand (to prayer) by night, but not all night,-
3 Half of it,- or a little less,
4 Or a little more; and recite the Qur'an in slow, measured rhythmic tones.
5 Soon shall We send down to thee a weighty Message.
6 Truly the rising by night is most potent for governing (the soul), and most suitable for (framing) the Word (of Prayer and Praise).
7 True, there is for thee by day prolonged occupation with ordinary duties:
8 But keep in remembrance the name of thy Lord and devote thyself to Him whole-heartedly.
9 (He is) Lord of the East and the West: there is no god but He: take Him therefore for (thy) Disposer of Affairs.
10 And have patience with what they say, and leave them with noble (dignity).
11 And leave Me (alone to deal with) those in possession of the good things of life, who (yet) deny the Truth; and bear with them for a little while.
12 With Us are Fetters (to bind them), and a Fire (to burn them),
13 And a Food that chokes, and a Penalty Grievous.
14 One Day the earth and the mountains will be in violent commotion. And the mountains will be as a heap of sand poured out and flowing down.
15 We have sent to you, (O men!) an apostle, to be a witness concerning you, even as We sent an apostle to Pharaoh.
16 But Pharaoh disobeyed the apostle; so We seized him with a heavy Punishment.
17 Then how shall ye, if ye deny ((Allah)), guard yourselves against a Day that will make children hoary-headed?-
18 Whereon the sky will be cleft asunder? His Promise needs must be accomplished.
19 Verily this is an Admonition: therefore, whoso will, let him take a (straight) path to his Lord!
20 Thy Lord doth know that thou standest forth (to prayer) nigh two-thirds of the night, or half the night, or a third of the night, and so doth a party of those with thee. But Allah doth appoint night and day in due measure He knoweth that ye are unable to keep count thereof. So He hath turned to you (in mercy): read ye, therefore, of the Qur'an as much as may be easy for you. He knoweth that there may be (some) among you in ill-health; others travelling through the land, seeking of Allah.s bounty; yet others fighting in Allah.s Cause, read ye, therefore, as much of the Qur'an as may be easy (for you); and establish regular Prayer and give regular Charity; and loan to Allah a Beautiful Loan. And whatever good ye send forth for your souls ye shall find it in Allah.s Presence,- yea, better and greater, in Reward and seek ye the Grace of Allah. for Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
