My son is 15 years old and a military USA Dependant. He is legally allowed to drive on his permit in the USA with a qualified driver next to him. The UK recognizes and allows for the use of overseas licenses however, what is the law pertaining to this - anyone know?

The law in the UK is that you must be at leat 17 to take driving lessons, or 16 if you are invalid in any way and at least 17 to drive on the roads of the UK and Europe. . a 15 yr old cannot drive in the streets of the UK or Europe. NO exception.

You must be over 17 to drive in this country, regardless of whether you have a valid license for another country or not, it would be a bit like an 18 year old from England going to America - he can legally drink in a bar in the UK, but not in the States.

First of all remember, you must drive on the "Right" side of the street. Driving in the US is easier than Europe because of the sheer size of the Highway system, also the driving signs are very easy since they all have the indication written on it (i.e. No Right Turn sign = No Right turn) I would strongly recommend that you "know" how to drive before embarking in such a trip, you certainly do not want to learn as you go from NY to LA Under the age of 18 you cannot drive by yourself, therefore 21 is good, the problem is if you are planning to rent a car, Rent A Car companies do not feel comfortable renting a car to someone in young age I would do some research before taking the trip The best recommendation I can give you is. Respect the rules of the road and you should be fine.

Apart from the fact that you must be at least 17 to drive in the UK, you must also be properly taxed and insured.

It is an offence in law to drive in the UK without a licence, tax and insurance and as you could never insure a 15 year-old to drive in the UK, the bottom line is, you can't do it
