It is appropriate actually, considering the definition of that phrase is "a woman who presides at a public ceremony or who acts as hostess of a stage, radio, or television show" or "a woman in charge of the proceedings at an event or entertainment"

if the host of the ceremony is female, then "mistress of ceremonies" is correct.
