Most pubs are now starting to suffer, because of a lack of trade. Which makes me wonder, where are all these non-smokers that said they were going to go to the pub more often after the ban came into force?
I'm still waiting for all the pubs to fill up with them.

You'll end up the same way as we have in Ireland, with a load of really nice beer gardens with patio heaters, screens and those windy out waterproof shelters so you stay really nice and dry as well as warm; it's actually better believe it or not! Before when you just had a smoke inside it was kinda boring, but now every one goes together and has a good chat, and its a great chance to get talking to some hot lad or lass :D an the main reason people aren't going to pubs isn't the ban its because the price of the booze has gone up again, so it's just cheaper to go to the offo and stay in with a few friends instead.

Im from Ireland and the smoking ban has been with us longer so i assume the pubs over there will do the same as here. Most pubs here now have a covered outdoor area with heaters and i gotta tell ya the crack out there is nearly better than inside the pub. You meet and gettin chatting to more people outside than you would inside! Buy a good winter coat and ul be grand :L

I guess you're in a country that recently enacted a smoking ban. Club owners here in New York had a similar concern when ours went into effect a few years ago and it wasn't so bad.

People went out for a quick smoke and came right back in and they were fine. In fact, most smokers I talked to about it were very pleased that they didn't smell like an ashtray anymore when they got home. As a non smoker...I was glad I didn't too.

The one problem that did happen though was that suddenly there were thousands more cigarette butts on the streets outside the newly non smoking establishments.

Also we do still have a few cigar bars here and cigarette smokers are still welcome there.

i agree with you devon, gone were the days of happy times where a pub was a pub, with the arcade games tables and fruit machines and darts boards and pool tables, now they are such cold places :( i still go out, even if its blowing a blizzard, u will still find me huddled in a corner having a smoke.... :s but in the new year im goin to quit, not the fact that im being forced to, just that im finding it a struggle to keep the habit up financially

The end of the british pub is on the horizon. Most turn into restaurants, serving alcohol as an afterthought. It is no longer an integral part of the community. RIP

A long slow and costly winter. They will have to lay off employees, due to lack of sales. The owners were promised that the non smokers would show up in more then enough numbers to off set the lose of any smokers, but they won't. When you force the people that are having fun to go elsewhere they tend to take their friends with them.

A couple places by me (the jersey shore) have outside areas that they use for outdoor dining in the summer, and in the winter they screen it up and have heaters in there, and you can bring your drinks (it's still considered outside even though it's screened in) - basically i'll only go to places like that b/c i refuse to stand outside and have a cigarette in the middle of winter when it's freeeezing!

I always smoke outside at home and work now anyway, so it wouldn't really bother me. I haven't smoked inside for about 10 years.

In the USA I think all the smokers have gone to the casinos. They can gamble with a cigarette hanging out the corner of their mouth and get whatever they want to drink. Smoker heaven.
