If evolution is true, then the story of the garden of eden is false.
If there was no garden of eden, then there was no original sin.
If there was no original sin, there was no need for a "savior".
If there was no need for a "savior" (Jesus)... then obviously there is no need for Christianity.
That is why they are afraid of it. Their entire religion falls apart if they admit that one simple thing.
And yes, they are quaking in their pews over it, trust me...
(Edit - and if you'll notice, by the very examples of people answering right here... the best defense they have against this knowledge is complete ignorance. As you can see here, the majority of these fundies don't have the faintest idea what evolution is. They say things like "dogs don't give birth to ducks", and think they've really been profound. What they don't realize is that evolution says nothing of the sort. That sort of nonsense is far closer to what they believe. It's really sad. Sometimes I think we should strap these bastards down and force them to take a 30 minute course on evolution. They can choose to disbelieve it at that point if they want to. But it's disgusting to me to see this kind of ignorance displayed by Americans that apparently have at least high school diplomas.)

Firstly, thank you for saying "Fundie" instead of "Christian." Not all Christians think this way, just the Fundamentalists -- a very important distinction to make!
It is because they believe that Jesus came to save us from our stain of Original Sin. They believe that the "sinfulness" of human beings began with the disobedience of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden -- they ate an apple, so now we all have to do to Hell when we die. Now, some Christians see this story as the allegory that it is. For the Fundamentalist, it is Literal History. Evolution challenges this view. If human beings evolved from some other animal, then there wasn't really a literal Adam and Eve, there wasn't really a Garden of Eden or a talking snake, and therefore Jesus died for nothing. They fear that if there wasn't an Adam and Eve, then the whole Bible is a lie, and there isn't a God, or Heaven, so that when they die they will just cease to exist. Their religion helps them to cope with their fear of Death by denying it. But, any challenge to that safe secure feeling they get from their religion brings that most primal fear to the surface -- the Fear of Death.
So, when you tell a Fundamentalist that Evolution is Fact, what they are hearing you say is "There is no God, and when you die, you'll really be DEAD, not continuing to exist in Eternal Bliss, but dead, dead dead!" That is why they respond to every bit of evidence you give them with "la la la I'm not listening!"
Of course, it's silly. There are plenty of people who believe in both Evolution and Religion, even many Christians. I think even the Catholic Church as accepted Evolution to some degree. So, it isn't really a threat to faith at all. When we are presenting Evolution to Fundamentalists, we need to remember this and emphasize that they can still have Jesus and Darwin, too. I think some Atheists just make this worse by enforcing the dichotomy between Religion and Science. That will just make them dig their feet in, and make it impossible for us to teach them any real science. So, stick to the facts of science, the fossil and DNA evidence, and avoid any attacks on their religion. Then, and only then, can we convince some of these believers that Evolution is true.

They fear it because it conflicts with their creation story. It also completely proves their Creationism "theory" wrong.
People also tend to fear what they do not understand. They do not understand the concepts of evolution to the extent that most people do. It completely conflicts with the indoctrination of their churches and their Bible, so they are scared to death of it. If it isn't in the Bible, or doesn't come from the rantings of some hick preacher, they think it's "the work of the devil." They really should open their eyes and their minds, and accept the obvious proof of evolution like the majority of people.
This la la fairy land they live in shields them from the outside world, and they hate and fear anything that is not part of their world. I kinda feel sorry for them.
My question is why can't they accept the truth of evolution instead of the pseudo-science of creationism? We have abundant evidence for it. They have not one shred of evidence for their creationism--they think that *if* the need should arise for them to need it, then the Bible is their proof. What they refuse to understand is that the Bible is not considered proof of anything, least of all science--which is yet another reason why they fear evolution.
Also, they are under the misconception that one must be atheist/agnostic to believe in evolution--another reason they fear it. What they refuse to acknowledge is that there are many Christians who believe in evolution. But fundies think it will undermine their beliefs.

Betty,
Some of the so-called evidence is conveniently ignored by the same people who push evolution as factual. The fossil record of a man found with a dinosaur has been ignored. The fruit fly experiments that do not work in the second generation yet they claim to be "evolutionary facts". Many of the so-called facts are not holding water when all of the evidence is observed by scientists. (I really do have a degree in Physics and in Mathematics from a decent College.) I believe in GOD and question Evolution at this point. I do not question your beliefs just the fact that you question mine... Have a wonderful week. I do care a great deal about YOU!
Thanks,

Did you know that when physicists discovered a recently found universal constant had been fine-tuned to the order of 120 decimal places, they made a leap of faith and invented a new concept to avoid having to believe in God?
They invented what is in itself a concept of pure imagination -- the multiverse. The concept is beyond science to prove one way or another, but that was the only way to avoid having to admit that God had created our universe.
And you say that Fundies are fearing evolution! Funny!
You guys so fear God and having to behave morally and humanely toward each other that you go to any length to avoid the belief in an almighty God.
Evolution is not feared except as one fears insanity and falling into that type of behavioral pattern.

You're showing your ignorance.
If it's a proven fact then why do they still call it the THEORY of evolution.
No one doubts that we as humans are evolving.
The problem is that some people think we evolved from apes. It's only a theory but it pisses off a lot of people who don't want to have apes for ancestors.
I'm just wondering why you so ardently fear fundies.

Fundies do not fear evolution....we laugh at it...
where do you find an unbroken fossil record??
there isn't one...
IT IS AN UNPROVABLE THEORY...the facts do not add up...the dots do not connect no matter how far the idea gets twisted around....
T---H---E---O----R---Y---- they fill in the blanks to try and connect the dots....
with that sort of evidence in a court trial the guy at the drug store 2 states away would be the victim and know nothing about it but would be told he is dead....
fairy land?
You want me to accept the theory that DNA "just" happened in the primordial soup!!!
The dinosaur fossil/ man fossil found in the same strata together...why is that being kept so quiet??
FYI I have 2 college degrees and numerous certifications....

what's a fundie?
people don't like to believe that what they believe in is wrong. So yeah, they don't want to believe in evolution because that would mean that allegory at the beginning of the bible isn't true.
"no one home" is using bad analogies. sure, code in a computer never became information, code in DNA only has 2 different possible outcomes, A-T, G-C, no more, they always align and DNA does not work like computer code, computer code does not have dipoles bipoles and hydrogen bonds that attract certain pieces of code to others, mitochondria do not 'lose' energy, thats absurd it probably says that in questionable intelligent design text books., If you take it down to very small amounts DNA is actually a very simple molecule, you should take a look at some proteins, it's beauty is in it's polymerisation and ultimatly the length that the molecule can get to is staggering, but it all happened by chance, for no reason other than because it could happen.
The macro analogy's that you use are idiotic, of course if you put the pieces of a bike in a room and leave it for a billion years you will still have pieces of a bike, this is used in the book 'darwins black box', which is a counter to evolutionary biology, however this is a bad analogy, on a chemical level, interactions between molecules work differently to on the macro level that we operate at, polar bonds, hydrogen bonds, etc for instance if you put the fundamental building blocks of RNA into an early earth simulation, Nitrogen, Oxygen, Hydrogen, Carbon, Phosphorous, what do you get, RNA, nucleotides and phospholipid bilayers, wow! what are the chances that you'd get the very basic building blocks of a cell? fairly low actually, but given BILLIONS of years, who knows.....
Organelles:, these formed outside of cells originally, but had desirable characterstics. Mitochondria have a different genome entirely to their host cell, so yes, this is a statement of fact, they originally formed extra cellularly.
all life on earth perhaps? I think so.
using analogies at the macro level for the micro level doesn't work.
Chemistry is a wonderful thing. The way chemicals react with one another is amazing, but it isn't magical.
Re: Darwin
He only set the ball rolling, modern evolutionary research doesn't really take everything from Darwins 19th century science, but creationists take all of their information from 3000BC storytelling.
But as long as there are bigoted small minded religious people out there, we can never win.

If you think it is proved without a doubt-then you should have no problem showing a little evidence. If there was any proof for evolution-then all the scientist who do not believe it would give up.
Think that through-

Your statement that evolution is a proved fact shows that you are a fabricator and do not understand science. They have not found the missing link. DNA shows that evolution is not possible. Mutations cause degradations in species. Not the other way around. Micro evolution is a fact but it is no more than adaptation. Micro evolution does not in any way prove macro evolution.
