Al salamo alaykom dear :-)

there're different ways to defend to yourself with, from them are those BOTH you've mentioned above !!

let me explain how ?!
**some Muslims are able to "not return back" the harm people caused to them, like for example, if someone insulted you, or keep saying bad things whenever they meet you....etc,.......some are just able not to reply (not because they're physically weak, but because they're "spiritually" STRONG..and believe that Allah (swt) will reward them on their patience and strong faith, because they were able for example to kick them or just insult them back..........BUT they didn't ) [ & this is the case of (wal kazemeen al ghayz wal afeen an el nass) ]

**now, the case of [(wal ayn bel ayn wal sen bel sen)]........now this is applied to those who're not able to be harmed and not return back the harm equally. For example, if i punched you in the mouth, and one of your teeth have broken or fallen........then, it's your right to avenge to yourself EQUALLY, which means that you've to punch him in the mouth and break a tooth of mine, and so on, it's applied on everything (except the case of death or killing someone, this is another issue and has its explanation in the Qura'an)

Hope that i've helped you somehow inshaa Allah :-)

It does seem that in modern times Moslems do little to defend themselves. They do a lot of flag burning and demonstrating but otherwise they allow the west and Israel to dominate them.

If the Islamic countries with their oil money were more united they would be able to put not violent pressure on the west and UN to bring sanctions against Israel for example.

Meanwhile why don't they do more to help Palestinians.

It seems that Moslems just stand by and watch as Palestinians are Ethnically Cleansed from their lands.

Saudi Arabia the most Islamic country also appears the most
Shameful and corrupt..What do Moslems think of the Saudi Royals? But I guess they're no worse than the Brits.

The two verses are different.

The first one means that if someone pisses you off, you should first calm yourself down then you should forgive him.

The second one means that if one person hurt another one, he should be punished exactly the same way. For example, if one guy cut other guy's hand, he should be punished by getting his hand cut. This way it would be fair.

Hope i helped you.

“There are four characteristics, whoever has all of them is a true hypocrite, and whoever has one of them has one of the qualities of a hypocrite until he gives it up: when he is trusted, he betrays; when he speaks, he lies; when he makes a promise, he breaks it; and when he disputes, he resorts to slander.” (Saheeh Al-Bukhari, Saheeh Muslim)
