NO! it is a full time 4 wheel drive jeep. The only way you could possibly do it is to get a new Transmition installed without the engaging mechanism in it, but why would you do that? it's a freaking JEEP! If you love jeeps you will suck up that you only get about 14 MPG and deal with it, If not go get a baby Cherokee, then you wont have that problem.

NO NO AND NO!!
You cannot use free wheeling hubs..you cannot disconnect the front drive shaft. That Quadra Trac is a viscous clutch that senses different drive speeds and directs power..Disconnect this unit and burn it up..at least $700 parts.
Sorry.
Junk yard and change transfer cases is probably best option.
Good Luck
Now that I have ranted and raved..One possibility....You said that this is a 1997 Cherokee...NOT a Grand Cherokee????...Uh...You cannot have a Quadra trac unit. Not offered. Now you can remove front drive shaft or get the expensive axle disconnects.

Quadra-Trac is full time 4WD there isn't a 2WD position. Its always in 4WD. The transfer case torque splits power 60/40 front/rear normally with the ability to send 100% power to either the front or rear axle. Its a great system, and I've taken mine off-road in a foot and a half of mud in full time 4WD with no problems. Its also nice in the winter with the snow, you don't have to shift into and out of 4WD because of changing road conditions.
Don't do what a responder said above and get manual locking hubs. Doing so and/or removing the front drive shaft will destroy the viscous coupler clutch packs in the transfer case. Most of the limited models have the Quadra-Trac option.

drag1line got it right. quadra trac is full time with no way to go into 2 wheel drive. being you state you have a cherokee
limited then you should not have quadratrac. you should have select trac and be able to move the selector to 2 wheel drive.
if you can't then take your jeep to a good shop to have it looked at.

The Quadra-Trac is a full time unit.
You could get manual hubs for the front axle, there is a conversion kit available from many aftermarket Jeep companies.
