Assuming that you have no friends or family close by that you can contact.

If you are an atheist can't you depend on your self? If you are a theist can't you depend on God?

Edit:
I am not talking about empathy.

I am a Human and that is the way I am made. I live states away from my family and live on my own. If you were to back up and read a previous answer you will see that WE are all crreated in this way. Whether we chose to accept help or not is our own choice. We are created for fellowship, family and community. If anyone wants to deny that and become a hermit, it is still their choice but it does not make it a right choice. I have God to comfort me, but I also give that comfort to others. What comes around goes around? If you want a friend, then be a friend. There by you just give a portion of yourself which is the most precious gift ever.

God Bless

It is the human condition to seek solace from other humans in time of need and crisis. We use others as a mirror for our own humanity, to determine whether our emotions are on target for the event at hand. Physical proximity of others can actually produce electrical activity of a healing nature, thus a hug or pat on the hand can actually speed recovery from shock or sadness. This is true for all humans regardless of their own particular belief systems.

It would be pretty sad for someone who had "no friends or family close by".

Why do people need comfort in a time of despair? It's called "comfort" for a reason.

It always feels better to have someone to lean on in times of despair, they help you over the rought spots, sympahtize with you and can always be counted on to be their for you, life alone is tough if you don't beleive that God or someone can help you find your way, its a cold cruel world and better to travel the road with a friend.

All of us have been wired from birth by the Lord to be with people..........and to be social creatures who depend not only on God, but on others as well.

True comfort comes only from the Lord.......but friends & family can be a strong support system as well.
