In the US, Deering is "the" banjo company. The difference between a cheap one and the great ones is that the cheap ones have aluminum resonance rings, and the expensive ones have sand cast bell bronze resonance rings, and weigh a ton! If you are learning, a cheap one will do fine. Deering even makes a banjo that is tuned the same way as a guitar and has 6 strings, so if you already play guitar, you can play it just like a guitar and have it sound like a banjo. I'd go with the cheap Deering.

As the song says, 'on your knee' ('...with a banjo on my knee,). But you will get further if it's a good and expensive model.

Check out the following banjos:
Deering GoodTime
Saga SS-10
Gold Tone CC50 or CC-100
All well-made, good-sounding, playable instruments. I think they're all around $300-350, or less.
