The last three times I have been to the dentist the anesthetic has not worked. The jaw and the gum were swollen and numb,as usual, but when he went to drill the tooth all the pain was there just as though I had not received any anesthetic. He doubled the dose but that did not help either. What is causing this and what can I do about it in the future ?

The most common cause of ineffective LA is poor technique, and most commonly affects lower injections (blocks). If you have had the same injections by another dentist and they worked, then your current dentist is having technique problems.
Sometimes anatomical variations can also make it hard to get the LA to the correct area e.g. thick bone in the upper jaw above the molars, palatal tipping of upper lateral incisor apices. A different technique will usually get around these problems.
If there is a toothache, then the LA will not always be 100% effective. But again, use of additional techniques can get around this e.g blocks, intraligamentary injections.

IF THERE IS NO INFECTION THEN IT MUST BE BECAUSE OF PATIENT APPREHENSION ,OR IF THE BLOCK IS NOT GIVEN PROPERLY
YOU WILL NOT GET ANESTHETIC EFFECT IF YOU ARE HAVING INFECTION,FIRST YOU HAVE TO TAKE ANTIBIOTIC COURSE THEN YOU WILL NOT HAVE PAIN AFTER GIVING ANESTHETIC SOLUTION

its just that you have become more sensitive. Inital drilling will be more sensitive, after certain depth it will become OK, more deeper it will be in the nerve.

HAVE YOU TAKEN RECREATIONAL DRUGS SUCH AS COCAINE WHICH WILL CAUSE THE ANESTHETIC EFFECTS OF LIDOCAINE TO BE INEFFECTIVE.
