My daughter has been coughing uncontrollably for one month - after seeing the doctor and being told she has a touch of broncitis but no meds given - was told it will wear it self out. Now one month later she is worst than ever with the cough so she was seen again by another doctor in same clinic and was given antibiotics (five pills) along with a new answer for her problem - pnenmonia. What gives?

A "z-pack" is a very interesting choice of antibiotic for pneumonia. Did they do a chest x ray? If not, I would tell her never to go to that clinic ever again. A person cannot be diagnoised with pneumonia without a chest xray.

If she really does have pneumonia, it is important to get the proper treatment for it as it can be very serious.

She needs to take it easy, push the fluids and take her medicine. I personally like hot mint tea when I am having a bad cough. Try a little honey in the tea.

With bronchitis, meds could have been given such as an anti-inflammatory.

It is my opinion, that you get a good doctor. My friend said to me, "what do you call the doctor who graduated at the top of his class....doctor....and what do you call the doctor who graduated at the bottom of his class.....doctor."

Find a great doctor and get her looked at. When the Respiratory system is compromised, it is important to get the correct and prompt treatment.

Good Luck

What gives is that either the first exam did not include a culture or it was misread or overlooked altogether. They probably made a diagnosis of bronchitis based upon blood work (CBC) only. If the white blood count was not elevated at the time of the exam, that was interpreted as being "Just a cold"(or touch of bronchitis). Some colds do clear on their own, but when they are bacterial, they won't. Usually, a CBC will show a doctor there is infection; a culture will show him what is causing the infection. Bronchitis doesn't necessarily "turn into" pneumonia, but, if untreated, the infection continues to worsen until it is fully pneumonia.

Hi, my son had a cough for over 6 months and i finally got a second opinion!! He has asthma, and the treatments are working phenominally!! He started with bronchitis, it progressed to pneumonia. I'm not saying she has asthma but the possibility is always there. It's scary to watch your child have trouble breathing and constantly cough. I hope everything turns out ok.

Pneumonia is just a complication of a cold or bronchitis. Most colds/bronchitis are viral and do not need antibiotics. Also, all colds do not turn into pneumonia and most bronchitis episodes do not turn into pneumonia. Hers happened to do so, you took her back in and now she is getting treated. There was no way to predict she was going to get pneumonia.

Sounds like the first doc was a moron. Apparently he thought it was a virus, but it looks like an infection. Hopefully the antibiotics will help her heal quickly.
