Whey is the liquid remaining when cheese is made.
Milk is warmed up and then a curdling agent added, called "rennet". Rennet is basically the enzymes from the inner stomach lining of a cow. Not much is needed as the enzymes are very strong.
The milk solids separate out as curds, which are compressed and molded into cheese.
The whey liquid is drained off and used in many ways. It can be evaporated and the protein rich whey solids used in food preparation. The liquid is also sold as animal feed and as protein powder for building muscle.
Whey is a very nutritious protein source for vegetarians.

Whey is the liquid that separates out of the milk when making cheese.
Cheese is made by adding rennet to milk and the milk proteins coagulate (clump together) into a solid. The remaining liquid is whey.
Rennet can be made from dead animal guts. Maybe that's what you're referring to?

If the rennet used to make it is of the traditional type, it will be extracted from a calf's stomach, and therefore although whey is from milk, an animal has died to make it. There are vegetarian ways to make it though.

Whey is a milk by product. Whey is a great product also. Has a lot of protein in it. When they are done using the whey, the often will irrigate their fields with it to spectacular results. Ive often wondered why vegans wont eat a cow but they will wear one.. Hard to fathom
