I recently puchased a Russin Tula Mosin Nagant dated 1939. My boyfriend and I have tried and searched online and found nothing. The thing is there is two brass finishings on each end of the upper wood. We've found pictures online but can not find the significance of this. Also if anyone knows anywhere online we can go to find out about the serial numbers that would be great.

I've already tried 7.62x54r.net, it helped some but still didn't answer some of the questions I had.
The brass fittings aren't for the sling but you may be on to something with the wood being thin and all. Oh and to add a little more about the rifle it's the 40in version which I believe is the 91/30 can't remember off hand.

What you are in reference to is quite common on military rifles with full wrap stocks in front of the receiver. Older models used brass and newer onces can be made of anything; their purpose in life is to keep the thin wood from cracking and splitting at the ends, where it is quite thin.

If its dated 1939 it will either be the M38 or the M91/30 depending on length. M38 is just the carbine version of the m91/30. The two brass fitting you see on either end is for the sling. Nagant slings a kind of unique in that they used the Dog collar sling which is a small leather 'dog collar' would go through each of them and a canvas sling would be looped through both of them. The site the other guy provided is a good one for finding out info as well.

Of course if you are talking about the upper wood as in on top of the barrel which I just noticed you put, then that would be to keep the wood from splitting/splintering. My M44's have that although they arent brass. That wood is extremely thin so it would be to protect the ends and to add strength.

There is one very well proven way to destroy a Mosin nagant, shoot corrosive ammo and never clean it. Eventually the rust will eat the barrel from the inside out.
