Program your music, figure out your foods, buy extra ice and paper plates and plastic cups. And extra paper towels (you know why). And extra trash bags. And set out multiple convenient trash cans. And most importantly...lock up and hide all your valuables!

first of all decide what sort of party you are going to have. is it a tea party, dinner partey, birthday party and so on, because it will ultimately downline the expense budget for you. eg. if it was a b'day party you would need a cake and blah blah blah.
but if it is a say, generally, a social gathering of a few family and friends, then you certainly have a few things to consider.
time and place.
if it is outdoors, you would'nt hav to worry about your carpet being ruined or your furniture getting wet.
time would decide your menu.
i would throw a party at night so that i would hav the day to prepare.makes sense doesn't it. tryto set the menu where you can serve food from the fridge and oven without you needing to be there.in the kitchen i mean.you need to be out there with the guests.
make appitizers such as chilled fruits or vegetables or in cocktail bites sandwhich. im pretty sureit wouldn't take time too whip up a salad. cut them up, add some lemon juice, some olive oil, a pinch of salt and sugar and you're done.
dont like that...just toss it around with some salad sauce from ur supermaket.
suops are so easy to prepare and taste good. you have so many choices from powdered to canned. if you are up to making your own. i'm sure it would be a snap.
choose a main dish with quantity and easy dining. stew or raost would be wonderful. no need to be at the stove.
ice cream as appetizers or as you wish and the night is done.
so...
set the place time and event.
set your budget.
make the menu.
prepare all ingredients before cooking.
cleanup before guests arrive while something is in the oven.
set a mood for the house.
music and ornamental decorations like statuettes or flowers at the right place would be perfect.
have some wine or champagne.
rest well the day before.

Do as much as possible prior to the party so you spend more time with guests and less time in the kitchen.
Have your food in a location different from the bar or drink area so you don't have 30 people packed into one area. It makes people walk back and forth between the two areas and mingle. Set out other finger foods around as well, mixed nuts, red & green m&m's, etc.
I don't know where you live, but if outside is an option, make your outside inviting so you have less people in the house. Lighting, candles, ashtrays, a conversational seating area.
If you've already sent out invites, it may be too late for this, but set an end time for the party. Usually it's just a few people that drink too much, get too rowdy, get out of hand - by setting a limit, it doesn't give those people a chance to get out of hand. Although depending on your friends, this doesn't always work :)

Include drugs for some of the guests and that should cut down on some of the expense. Can I come over?
