I have noticed this phenomenon with a couple of other users. I rarely get thumbs down when I answer in other sections, regardless of how irreverent or smart alecky I get, yet I answer things in the Korea section and post a verifiable source and still get a thumbs down. What gives?

Gaya, you bring up some really good points. In fact, I think my profile is set so only people on my contacts can see my Q&A. I believe that is why I don't get thumbs down in other places; because the spiteful person cannot track me. For a little while one person had multiple accounts (and likely still does) so bad people sometimes slip through.
I think I am going to go with the new avatar for a week or so and see if it helps.

um whoever said its because your avatar doesn't look korean. is obviously just stupid or they want to think of a funny answer. (which its not)! so i guess ill try a be truthful instead of sacastic. i kind of noticed that too but its not because koreans dont like other people that aren't in the same race. i guess korean have a lot of pride:) which is a good thing (in my opinion). so if they see an answer that can sound cruel and racist, they put a thumbs down. also, it can be other people too. crazy people who just likes to click their mouse buttons just so they can hear the clicky click sound.
:)

because it seems ur answers r blunt at times' and has a tone of almost respect but disregards for the koreans that r on this site. although u might consider it truthful in ur own way and may enjoy ur rather blunt comments people(koreans) may find it rather annoying. im surprised u even noticed the negitives u were getting to post this remark.

Set your q&a to private, so only your contacts and fans have access to your profile. I think that is a little more effective.. Changing your avatar may work for a while, but your name is still the same and the fact that you're a top contributor might hint someone you're still the same person in the future.
(sorry, but I think the idea of your new avatar looks ridiculous compared to your original one.)

Dude, your new avatar cracks me up....
Why would anyone say "because they can tell you are not Korean"... what???
I don't think there are many Koreans, (who live in Korea) in this section. Most of the useful info comes from ex-Pats over here. I have always assumed that the "thumbs down" are coming from people not living here.
And I just ignore them because you can't possibly have any idea of the details of everyday life without being here full-time.
(although I do appreciate the views of people who have visited or have family here)

Great avatar. Like you're halfway into witness relocation.
It's not you, I don't think. This section is kind of negative. Everyone gets thumbs down, all the time.
Other sections I visit are less plagued with the problem. I'm going to start thumbs-upping everyone to balance it out.
Edit: 2 Thumbs Down for me in under 2 hours. See, it's not you.

I've noticed that too.And I see no absolute reason for you to get any thumbs down in your answers. They're perfectly normal.I think it's after your new avatar change.Try changing your avatar. It might be the hat.It kind of reminds me of the Japanese rainhats in the ancient times.

Someone doesn't like you. I get the same thing, but it doesn't bother me.
People that live in Korea know what's up, even if we are "pompous" knowing what we're talking about and giving truthful answers.

maybe because of racial discrimination.
maybe they dont like black people.
*sorry

then answer again.. see if theyll give u a thumbs down.
sometimes, koreans tend to be judgmental and all that...
