I'm a 14 year old girl, my doctor told me to get a blood test done because im kind of over weight, and then i got the results in the mail and I'm kind of thick, like my body, but I'm not HUGE, and the results say nothing of being diabetic but it does have a collum for it and i dont know if it says i am for sure a diabetic it says to set an appointment to "talk" about the results i am going tomorrow, and im really scared that she'll say im diabetic i have cried so much, because im scared and my parents say that she probably just want to talk about my diet and excersise but i still worry. Any good advice? Is diabetes something really bad? I have no idea what to think any more. =/

Please dont worry, you probably dont have diabetes, i am sure the talk will be about a diet, there is more to diabetes than being over weight, you are thirsty a lot, sores dont heal, you may feel weak and dizzy sometimes, a lot of other symptoms. Chill until you have to worry, and it isnt the end of the world, if you do have it, it can be managed.

The most important thing is that if the doctor tells you you have diabetes, you have to learn to control yourself and what you eat. It will not stop you from having a wonderful life, but you do have to take your sugar levels and watch your food intakes forever. You just learn to do it and you will be fine. The biggest indicator of diabetes is having a big waist or being an apple. There are lots of other indicators and you need to learn about them because you can be prediabetic. But prediabetic just means you can be careful and never really get the disease but you need to know what to do. Noone ever told me when I was young cause if they had, I would have never allowed myself to get it. I was an apple and tended to put weight on in my tummy instead of my backside and thighs. I also had a lot of problems with my gums bleeding. I also didn't handle carbs well but didn't realize it until it was way too late. I seemed to put on weight easier than others and I could eat and then my body would tell me I was hungry again even tho' it hadn't been long since I'd eaten. I'll be glad to tell you all that I know. If the doctor says diabetic or prediabetic, email me and I'll give you some excellent advice and some advice on reading material. You don't have to end up where I am. OH and I'm type II-meaning I make insulin but my body doesn't use it correctly. There is also type I and that means your body doesn't make insulin. Type IIs tend to be heavier and type Is are thinner. But your doctor will tell you all that you need to know. If anything I have said rings a bell, please email me anyway. It's important. I'll be glad to give you some advice that I wish someone had given me.

There is a BIG difference between Type I and Type II diabetes. It sounds like if you have diabetes, it is probably Type II since it would be unusual to have Type I and not be diagnosed before now. Type II diabetes is a problem lifestyle--your diet and exercise, like your mom suggested. It can be controlled by improving your diet and exercise. If you are as scared as you say you are, change your lifestyle, and improve your health. This is not something that you should panic about-- it IS something that you can do something about. It is up to YOU to do something about. Your mom can help by changing the way she cooks but she can't follow you around and dictate what you eat--you are old enough to make good choices about what you eat and exercising. Take control of your health. It's the best thing you can do for yourself.

If you want to be worried, that's fine because everyone is when they hear the doctor say to your mom "Your daughter might be a diabetic. Please take your kid to the hospital." I was freakin' scared when I heard I had to go to the hospital. You should realize that you'll make it through all that junk. On the bright side you'll miss school(that is if you do get diabetes, no offence).
