Refined sugar is, or may be, processed by filtering it through burnt animal bones.

Some people avoid white flour because they consider it unhealthy. A lot of people believe any food that is highly processed is not as good for you as food that has had little or no processing (like whole grains). There seems to be at least some credible evidence that this is true.

I don't know of any animal connection to white flour per se.

Many people have given you information on vitamin D3: please be aware that vitamin D3 is often added to things that may appear to be vegan (ie, margarine) but is NOT suitable for vegans as it is animal-derived. Vitamin D2 is a vegetarian form of the same supplement. As for sugar and flour - yes vegans eat it! (yeast too!) Refined sugar is often processed using bone char and may be avoided by some vegetarians/vegans. Personally, I find it most viable to use vegan sugar at home (you can buy sugar that specifically says it was processed using only plant sources), and not worry about whether sugar may or may not be vegan when I'm dining out (or in something like a granola bar, but I also avoid most pre-packaged foods). PETA has some good information on foods that are 'accidentally vegan' on their website, including lists of candy. As for carmine/cochineal - even if bugs don't feel pain in the same way as we do, veganism is about not using animals as commodities. Plus, it's gross! Bug juice, anyone?

RE:
Why don't vegans eat white flour and sugar?

I don't know of any vegans who don't eat white flour because "it's not vegan." They may not eat it for other reasons, but they have nothing to do with veganism.

Same with sugar. Some vegans may not eat sugar because of health reasons, or some will search out certain brands of unrefined sugar, some only eat non bone-char refined sugar. But other than that, generally speaking there is nothing unvegan about sugar or flour.

A lot of people like me get lumped into the "vegan" category if they don't eat dairy and eggs even though they aren't technically vegan. While I do not like the idea of animal byproducts being used to filter sugar, I avoid it because it has been highly processed. Same with white flour. It's not as nutritious as sugar in a more natural state (evaporated cane sugar is what I use as well as agave nectar or date sugar or stevia or honey (most vegans don't use honey).

My friend who is vegan tries to adviod white flour and sugar because her 12 year old is diabetic and they took the family's diet as "Back to Eden" {the Garden of Eden} as possible. It is not part of most vegan diets to advoid the two but neither one are good for a person. Despite the doctor treating her son disagrees with her diet the doctor is amazed constantly how so not by the book things are going for this child. If other vegans other than her advoid both items of food then I don't know why!

Because white flour is "enriched" with vitamins derived from dead animals, and white sugar is filtered through "char", which is made from burnt animal bones.(char is also used in fish aquariums) Most veggies wouldn't eat white flour and sugar in any case, as both are very bad for your body. White flour has been bleached so its void of any nutrients, which is why it is "enriched" with garbage to make it more nutritious. You can safely use whole grains and organic, unprocessed (raw) sugar if you are vegan.

because it is not in its natural stat. The sugar is refined&processd&flour is husked, nilled&processed. They may also contain addatives&preservatives to prolong shelf life&these of course arn't natural.
