I guess you mean sleep apnoea syndrome. Here obstruction in the upper airway leads to interruption of the breathing cycle on a frequent basis during sleep.

There is a medical condition called Sleep Apnoea (pronounced Ap-nee-a) When the person is sleeping the trachea gets squashed and causes the person to stop breathing and therefore they wake up even if they are not aware of it. The restless sleep means that their daily lives become inhibited.
It is associated with snoring and a cause is obesity! It is usually treated with a mask that pumps a contolled flow of air to keep the airway open!

Obstructive Sleep Apnoea. The person often snores then stops breathing for long periods, then starts again, often after coughing or choking. It's because their airway has closed. Sufferers tend to be a little above their ideal body weight and, in particular, to have a large neck measurement .... but there are many exceptions. It is easy enough to get it checked using a simple machine that monitors your breathing overnight (if the GP refers you). The treatment (apart from getting back to ideal body weight) is to use a kind of ventilator that keeps your airway slightly pressurised while you sleep. It's called CPAP (short for Continuous Positive Airway Pressure). You can still breath OK but it stops the airway from collapsing. Surgical treatment is not common in the UK because it is painful and, generally, of short term benefit only.

The condition is called Sleep Apnea. It happens when you stop breathing several times throughout the night. It is diagnosed through a sleep study work-up. The treatment involves wearing a special C-Pap mask.
Apena can also cause high blood pressure and heart conditions..so it really needs to be checked out

Sleep apnea. Their uvula in the back of their throat relaxes and they stop breathing which wakes them up constantly so they don't ever get a full nights sleep. There are over the counter meds your friend can try
