Eggnog does taste better with rum but i have used other stuff to make it "kick" a little more. I used vodka once with the rum. I say make 2 batches of eggnog. One alcoholic and one booze free. Use food coloring to tell which is which. Some people like myself prefer not to drink at anytime of the year.

Whiskey-plain, American blended, Canadian blended
Spiced Rum
Plain rum
Brandy, cognac
Spiced Rum--any brand will work
Seagram's Seven (American Blended Whiskey)
Seagram's Canadian Whiskey
Plain Rum
Evan Williams (whiskey)
Brandy, cognac
No vodkas, no tequilas, no gins, no sweet liquors.
Although in general vodka can be substituted for white rum, it is generally not done with egg nog.
If, and this is a big if, you don't like the taste of egg nog and want to flavor it differently, I'd try a flavored rum that you like, such as coconut or banana rums, they are both in keeping with the season and generally go well with creamy drinks. I would not add a flavored Sweet liquor as egg nog is already sweet.
Spiced Apple Cider; Sangarees, Fruit punches, Hot coffee drinks,
Hot toddies, Martinis, cocktails, etc.
