why do they call them crackers when they are clearly cookies?

Well in that sense, Nilla wafers are just cookies, and graham crackers are just cookies.

I think it's all in the marketing and the tradition and origin of a product.

I should stop opening any question with animal cracker connotations at all though... it's starting to get as boring and tiresome as Britney.

It tricks people into buying them as a "healthier" snack food. Cracker sounds a lot healthier than cookie does.

And, since they taste like cookies, people will keep buying them and eating them for both their nonexistent health benefits and their great taste.

"Animal Cracker" is an outdated term. The preferred term is "Veterinary Chiropractor."

when they first were made they WERE crackers..name just stuck
