It should be done as quickly and painlessly as possible. In general, though, if you stay away from dangerous animals, they aren't going to come after you or try to hurt you. If you see something dangerous, move in the opposite direction.
If you're sitting by the pool and a rattlesnake falls out of the sky on you, feel free to throw it. If you're chilling on the beach and a bear comes out and tries to maul you, it probably is rabid, insane, or mind-controlled and you should shoot it to put it out of its misery.
Sarcasm aside... try to avoid the problem in the first place. You don't NEED to kill the mice if your house is well-sealed. You don't need to squish a scorpion or spider just because it's deadly. If you can capture it and set it free outside, do so. That's how I deal with wasps and things. Better to catch it and let it go outside than make it mad.
As for wolves and coyotes? Provide a secure shelter for the animals if possible. Predators have to eat , too. It's not entirely their fault that all of their usual prey is gone because a farm destroyed the habitat.

There shouldn't be farms because they are inhumane.
Coyotes etc. should be allowed to eat cows and stuff because it's natural for them. They're just looking for a snack.
Usually if you don't bug a poisonous snake, it will leave you alone too. I don't think mice pose any threat.
I think if there was an animal that was causing trouble, for example some careless camper has been feeding a bear, now it's tame. It should be relocated to somewhere nowhere near people. I know this is unrealistic. :( other stuff, like skunks, racoons etc, should be caught in live traps and released into the wild where no one will bug it.
good question.:)

Depending on the type of animal, some can be "warded" off through homeopathic remedies....marigolds and pepper for rabbits, soap in pantyhose for deer (of course that's not practical for hundreds of acres but...and then for vicious animals that spread disease such as raccoons and possums you can use a live trap and then drive it a few miles away (of course you have to figure a way to get it out of the trap and then you may be just depositing it for someone else to deal with but it's an option. The last option of course being a gun; if it's a large animal and you know of no other course of action, a quick blow will kill it quickly. Keeping your animals penned up securely can be difficult but if you're going to keep livestock or poultry you have to be prepared for that.
Kaream: mice spread disease rapantly if not cleaned up after and/or exterminated. People's permanent housing is what is the "problem"....if people built temporary shelters alot of issues would be resolved (mold, dust, losing property value) but that's unrealistic to have millions of people on the move constantly.

I think there is a difference between killing an animal needlessly (and killing them for food is, in all but the rarest cases, needless) and killing them to protect yourself and your space. We are animals, too, and I have no problem with defending myself and my home. I am a creature that has intelligence and base my decisions on rationality and compassion and logic, though, not just instinct. It is primitive to just lash out and KILL! KILL! KILL! I can make choices to lessen the liklihood that animals will invade my home or harm myself or my family.
Please understand that there are many people who support animal rights to varying degrees. Some will harm no living creature and will even wear a face mask so as to lessen the microorganisms they breathe in. Others oppose animal testing but still eat animals, or vice versa. Others don't have a problem eating meat, but want slaughterhouses to be more humane. Some people just do what they can to contribute less to practices they think are really awful and don't worry so much about any kind of code that others think they need to stick to. So, you're going to get answers from individuals, not answers that speak for any entire group of people, just so you know!

There are organizations that will relocate animals who live in the wild that are a problem. In the case of snakes or insects, if necessary, kill them. Anytime a person's life is in danger then we need to protect ourselves. Vermin and harmful insects should be killed. I don't normally kill spiders, but if it's poisonous and you're threatened then yes, kill it. The thing is, killing should be a LAST option.

There are ways to trap these animals.
"watch out for wolves or coyotes that might eat their crops"-----This I would like to see.

im a vegetarian animal lover and here's my perspective:
human beings need to stop acting like we own the world. we were the last species to arrive! sortof. i think we need to learn how to better survive with animals as mother nature intended...it's possible! we invade their land and then are shocked when they show up in our homes, where else are they supposed to go?!?!? we're too greedy, we need to learn to leave some land alone, and they'll leave us alone. and we need to stop taking animals into environments inwhich they don't belong....cows are such an environmental nightmare. we messed with mother nature, now she's fighting back.
