And it was good too, wasn't it?
PS. If there was chicken in the soup it was most likely made with chicken stock too, my dear! :-)

If you just ate a bit of chicken by accident then I would consider you still vegetarian.
But if you continued to eat the soup after having taken the chicken out, I think you made a deliberate choice to eat a meat product, since at that point you were fully aware that the soup was made with chicken stock. You wouldn't pick the pieces of chicken out of chicken noodle soup, eat the rest and say it was vegetarian, right? This was chicken vegetable soup, not chicken noodle soup, but the principle is the same in my mind.
That said, it's still not a big deal. It's not like they are going to revoke your membership in the vegetarian club.
You have a choice to either be really obsessive about your diet, or to realize that you're not perfect so there are bound to be little slip-ups along the way, and learn to live with them.

Of course. There have been many occasions I have accidentally eaten meat. Sometimes I just didn't know, or I was told it was vegetarian, but it still had fish or something in it (I'm not the best at discerning flavors). I even once was so hungry, I ate almost 2 pieces of veal parmigiana (I ordered the eggplant one) until I came to my senses and got upset at the staff.
It's really hard to not accidentally eat meat here and there. When you eat out, you never know what has chicken stock, or beef flavoring. I'm sure there are plenty of times I've had fish in my sauce at Thai restaurants (sometimes I forget to request not to have it).
Don't worry, it's the purposeful eating that makes one vegetarian or not.

You are considered vegetarian if you continue having vegetarian lifestyle. Since you didn't know it you can't be blamed.
However I think it is highly impolite and immoral of your grandmother trying to sneak in meat! My grandmother did that too once and I completely lost trust with her food and refused to eat it some time. After that she understood that it really means much to me and now she doesn't do that anymore. Try to explain her all the aspects why you have chosen to be vegetarian and try to find a form for the information that she will truly understand too - it might be hard depending on your grandmothers personality of course...

It was an accident. Who cares what other people think? You know you didn't do it on purpose, so should not waste time worrying about if you're still "considered" a vegetarian.

similar incident just happened to me
I have been vegetarian for about 5 months now.
On Thanksgiving I walked into my Grandfathers house and before he even greeted me he shoved a bite of kibbey?
into my mouth, I wanted to spit it out but did not want to be disrespectful, I found out that it did have meat in it....I still consider myself vegetarian. No worries...

i think so. i mean it was an accident, and it's not like you continued to eat the chicken once you found out it was in there. i mean there are vegetarians who still eat seafood, which are still animals, so accidently eating a piece of chicken sounds fine to me. to be technical, there was probably still the flavor of chicken in the broth even after you took the chicken out, but you didn't know that there was chicken in there to begin with so i think it's ok.
i applaud you for being a vegetarian- i would like to be one for animal rights but i honestly don't think i could do it. i like meat too much lol.

Yes. It's not like you knowingly ate a chicken leg or something. It was an honest mistake. Don't be to hard on yourself.
