Your day has hypertension, better known as high blood pressure. Have him go to the doctor as soon as he can. He probably won't suffer a heart attack right this minute - but the chances of him having heart disease or suffering from a heart attack or stroke is much higher than normal.
Normal blood pressure for an adult is 120/80 - although some doctors recommend 110/70 as modern day medicine is improving.
You want to make sure that you are measuring your dad's blood pressure correctly . . . meaning measuring it 5 times over a span of 30 minutes - at rested heart rate of course.
Ways to lower blood pressure:
1. EXERCISE! BY ALL MEANS, MAKE HIM RUN!
2. Eat less salt! Salt will damage your kidneys and run up your blood pressure.
3. Try not to be stressed.
Good luck to you and your father!

3 years ago, I was diagnosed - hypertension with a reading of 160/100. I used to feel dizzy a lot, my legs had awful cramps, and levels were very low in my potassium, causing my fingers and toes to always cramp together. One day I started to feel really faint while I was driving with my daughter in the back seat and I passed out, hitting 3 cars and ending up in a ditch. That moment,I knew I had to do something because my meds weren't working. I heard about this diet from a friend and thought I'd give it a shot. The results have been remarkable. In just 21 days, I honestly can't remember feeling this good, my blood pressure went from 175/110 to 125/70.

He needs to monitor his BP at home with a home unit. Many people (in fact most people's ) BP will spike up when they go to the doctor. I'll bet you 10-1 it will be much lower while checking it at home. HOWEVER 170 over 98 is high and also very lopsided on the top # indicating a possible heart defect of sorts. The bottom number is the more deadly number and at 98 it's high but not super high. He needs to be monitored, have many lifestyle changes and if it remains high, he will need meds.

See a doctor ASAP!
Feed him some fiber! This lowered my dad's blood pressure by going on a fiber-based diet with lots of fruits and vegetables. Cut down on his meat intake--a lot.

get him checked out and follow the docs orders also have him go on a low sodium diet, which may be hard for him if he eats a lot of salt, i have been on a low sodium diet for over 20 years and it does get hard at times( i love potato chips lol) but it will help, try mrs. dash seasonings they taste really good and can be used on quite a few dishes.

You should read "The Blood Pressure Solution" (also available in electronic format, watch the video presentation here: http://www.fixbloodpressure.com ) It's a very comprehensive step-by-step book that walks you through the natural remedies of high blood pressure. It provides you with a lot of information on what foods to eat, how you can acquire and prepare these foods, how you can change your lifestyle for the better, how to eliminate the toxins from your body, how to reduce stress, how you can check your blood pressure level the correct way etc.
The book is amazing in that it not only lowers your blood pressure without the help of medications; it also aids you in having a life that is healthy, happier, and less stressful. This book chanced my life.

Yes, that is very high. Has he been to his physician lately? He needs to get a checkup if he hasn't gotten one lately. He will need to start medication for the blood pressure to bring it down. He'll need to limit his salt consumption and begin eating and exercising healthily.
The meds aren't bad--I've taken them for many years and they've got generics available so I pay little of nothing ($30/3 month supply). And they work.
