It is never too late to quit smoking. Whereas, you probably have some lung damage, when you stop smoking, the lung damage stops. If you keep smoking, your lungs will continue to get worse and worse. Unfortunately, the lungs cannot regenerate themselves so whatever damage is done, is done. Depending on how bad your lungs are now, there really is no reason that you cannot optimize your lungs. If you need medication to open those lung passages, there is plenty out there.
I would advise that you seek the help and advise of a good Pulmonologist. They can do a test to see exactly how your lungs are. They know the latest drugs and treatments to make your lungs work the best that they can.
Good Luck

I smoked 3-5 packs a day for 17 years. I quit on 15 April 91 and have never regretted it. I was told in my smoking cessation class that everything in your body returns to "normal" after 10 years.
Good luck.

No, it's better for you to quit. However, 20 years from now you could still get lung cancer even if you quit today. It would be less likely though.
The carcinogens also travel throughout the rest of your body. It could really cause cancer anywhere. I've always thought that smoking is second to eating healthy and excercising. Obesity is a greater nationwide health problem than smoking.

It's never too late to quit.
If you quit now, you could save your lungs from further damage.
They won't be in the shape they were fifteen years ago, obviously, but they'll be much better than if you kept smoking.
Good luck!

It is never too late to quit. My old teacher (an RN with 20+ years experience) told me that every year you have stopped smoking, your lungs repair themselves. The body is a wonderful instrument so take good care of it and put the cig out for good!!!

i quit two weeks ago(cold turkey) and im doing great.
they say if you quit before the age of 35 you can reverse almost all of the damage.
i dont know how old you are but i would say quitting is always a good choice

I've been smoking for 25 years - but not very many. It's never too late to quit - don't line up excuses before you've even started!!! Just do it

well, how old are you? i've heard that if you quit before you're 40 your body has a really good chance of healing. it can almost get to the point it was before you started smoking.
but, even if you are older (even MUCH older) stopping is good for you. it will help your blood pressure and your heart, not to mention your lungs. and you'll save sooooo much money.

Quit while you're ahead. For every year that you smoke, it takes twice a long for you lungs to heal themselves. So in your case it will take 30 years for your lungs to be healed. At least that's what my doctor said but I think he's full of ****. lol
