Just a heads up on this....
Stolen and recovered might be cheaper, but banks don't finance them, and they are uninsurable....

There seems to be mixed feeling towards insurability, and financibility. I drove a car like this about a year back, had to pay cash, and couldn't get insurance. But then again, I don;t live in the US, good advice would be to contact the Banks, and insureres, and find out about these beforehand.

In the UK they go to salvage auctions around the country, try your local Universal Salvage auction, and just a note to the first answerer - they are TOTALLY insurable and you can get finance on them, my husband has been dealing in salvage for the best part of 20 years and we have had shed loads of S&R's with no problems whatsoever. That is what HPI is there for - to tell you whether the car has been recovered so it can be resold and insured.

these cars are auctioned off at salvage auctions across the country, typically you need a dealers license, or a junkyard license, to purchase a car from there. be aware of what you are buying, and expect to pay probably 20% more than what you figure what the car will cost to fix, YES you can get insurance, it will be a salvage auto. and depending on what state you live in, it will need to get certified to put it back on the road, GOOD LUCK

I was surprised to read that someone couldn't get insurance for a stolen recovered car, HPI classify them as cat D write off and these cars are insurable

check a mjor city near yous website for police auctions, like Cincinnati, OH has got one

Yes you can get insurance on them, the title will be in your name and you wont need a bank, because your not going to pay much

I have expierence with these types of vehicles and my rates have never been high. Just get liability. and dont pay more then $1,000 for a car at one of these auctions

Lets use common sense on this one, In the US it is the law to have insurance, so the police are not going to sell you an illegal car, you have to have insurance before you even drive away with it unless you tow it

It Depends there are loads of auctions all around the country. And they are usually once a month. You would have to contact your local police station and ask.

Or you could try asking local mechanics or scrapyards.

Start by asking your local law officials. They typically hold auctions for cars, motorcycles, etc.

ITS BEST IF YOU CONTACT YOUR LOCAL (DMV) DEPARTMENT OF MOTOR VEHICLES OFFICE, THEY WILL BE ABLE TO ANSWER ANY AND ALL OF YOUR QUESTIONS AND AT THE SAME TIME YOU WILL BE GETTING THE CORRECT ANSWER TO YOUR QUESTION.

MOST INSURANCE COMPANIES WILL NOT INSURE THESE VEHICLES BECAUSE OF LIABILITY TO THEM.

IF THEY DO INSURE IT FOR YOU THE RATES WILL BE HIGHER AND THE VEHICLE WILL HAVE TO BE FULLY INSPECTED.

IF YOU BUY ONE OF THESE VEHICLES FOR $10,000 AND YOU ARE INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT AND THE VEHICLE IS TOTALED, THE INSURANCE COMPANY MIGHT GIVE YOU 1/3 OF WHAT THE VEHICLE IS ACTUALLY WORTH.

EVERYONE THAT BUYS ONE OF THESE VEHICLES WILL END UP PISSED OFF OR IN THE POOR HOUSE.

VERY BAD TO BUY NO MATTER HOW GOOD THE PRICE MIGHT BE.

ALSO YOU CANNOT GET ANY TYPE OF WARRANTY OR EXTENDED WARRANTY ON THESE VEHICLES AS WELL.
