Man dog tags are dog tags as long as they have what information is needed. Name, Social Security #, blood type, and religious preference. I don't think the military cares where you get your dog tags so long as they are durable and in official format. I'm in the USAF, and I've seen more people go get there's off base at a military surplus store rather than having them issued on base. I can not tell a difference between the two, and my job in the AF is sheet metal. Meaning I work with all kinds of different metal on our aircraft, and if I can't tell a difference between the metal used in the tags from civilian stores and the ones the AF issues I guarantee you can't. Please don't ask anything else about dog tags.

As everyone else has said, they are only real if they are gov't issued. So even the ones they make at the airshow are just for fun. It used to be that dependants were issued dog tags as well. I still have mine from when my dad was AF active duty.
AF does not require you to wear them at all times. Most guys do keep one in their wallet. Now, when they are forward deployed, they are required to have them on their person. Wearing them is not always an option, depending upon the job. Hubby can't wear any jewelry, including his wedding band due to the hazards in his job.

if they weren't issued to you from the military then they're fake...
real dog tags are stamped with the service members full name, social security number, religious affiliation and blood type...also if you have an allergy you are issued a red dog tag also stamped with your allergy info...the ones on websites are usually engraved with the info you want them to put on...and also real dog tags have a rounded edge that is raised where as alot of the fake ones are just cut without the edge...
the army requires that you wear your dog tags at all times and actually have done inspections for dog tags and id cards...not sure about other branches...
hope that helps

Okay, if you want a pair of dogtags that are as real as possible, they should say:
LNAME
FNAME MI
XXX-XX-XXXX (SSN)
A POS (or whatever your blood type is)
ROMAN CATHOLIC (or whatever your religious preference is)
Only capital letters are used. While these aren't official, they'll be very similar. If you want to order a set that are high quality, try a store like the Cavalry Store (on the internet).

FWIW, Soldiers will wear ID tags at all times when in a field environment, while traveling in aircraft, and when outside the continental United States. Personnel will wear ID tags around the neck, except when safety considerations apply (such as during physical training). AR 670-1

Often the fake dog tags are made of cheap aluminum and are stamped with information that is different from the info that is on the real things. When I was in the Army, our dog tags had our names, our service numbers, our religious affiliation, and our blood type.
Hope this helps.

No one cares where your dog tags come from.
Mine are aluminum and a dull silver color.
My dad has red ones, black ones, blue ones and silver ones.
Some of his say US Army, some don't.
Below is a picture of a army dog tag from 1965.
Thats not what my AF dog tag looks like.
So there is no such thing as just one type of military dog tag.

Once again if they are not Government issued they are fake, but to get as close as you can get to real, you go to a military surplus store (anyone that is close to a lilitary installation) and get your info put on one and wha-la, you have dogtags.
FYI, my hubby says the onece in the surplus stores are real, just not issued by the government because they are like the government issue, they are tin and as long as they have the same type of info on them as the government puts on a government dogtag, they are one and the same, so whatever you feel is real is real.

the difference is the ones you buy ARE NOT OFFICIAL MILITARY ISSUE. period. you are issued Dog Tags because you EARN them, not becuase you spend a few bucks.
oh, and for the record: after Boot/Basic and maybe School, you don't actually wear them again
My husband hasn't worn his in over ten years.
