The original protestants were indeed heretics, since they were Catholics, and were professing doctrines that were clearly in opposition to those of the Catholic church.
After this first "generation" passed, we then had non-Catholics professing doctrines contrary to that which the Catholic church professes.
That would be apostacy, rather then heresy, since it was done by people who were not Catholic.

It depends on what they believe if is is a matter of dogma it is heretical. Most protestants are ok with the major dogmas but only differ on format.

any group that doesnt put Jesus first and follow only him is a cult.
If you follow mans rules (sacriments, mary worship, baptism for the dead) you have left God and followed man
