YOU can't.

The only ways to determine whether a pup is still in there are:
1. Pay for an ultrasound scan.
2. Pay for an xray.
3. Pay for an autopsy after she dies.

Among the many 'rules' for breeders is "If you can't afford the vet fees should something go wrong, DON'T mate the b_itch".

IF there is another pup in there then the best you can hope for is that it died some time ago and was partially resorbed in utero. In which case you will either soon see a bundle of strange-looking muck (I'd expect you to have already seen it), or you'll never see anything because the b_itch finishes resorbing it.

If she is keeping her pups clean & well-fed and they are thriving and she is going toilet correctly & has been eating properly for the last 3-4 days, I'd say that there was no additional pup.

If there is has been a dead dog sitting in her birth canal for 5 days... I am suprised she is alive.

You NEED the vet to extract that because the chances of her doing it herself are limited at this time. Find the cash! I don't know if you planned to breed... but this is your responsibility now. If you don't, I would be surpised if she is still around in a few days.

If there is a dead baby in her, she will die. It may happen suddenly, she will not necessarily have any symptoms until she gets septic. I can't understand how the vet said there "might" be one more! An X-ray or sonogram will show for sure! Take her to aanother vet, or the same vet, and ask for an Xray or ultrasound.

This is why prior to breeding a dog you have to have an account set up for emergencies. Only an irresponsible breeder would breed a dog without the proper funds to care for what might arise. Now you have to either come up with the money or chance the dog dying. I never heard of a vet that would allow this. There is a shot that helps promote expelling a pup. A good breeder would make sure the dogs health is foremost at this time.

You need to have her checked. If you are breeding these dogs then you should be able to take care of their after care. If she carries this dead puppy in her she will become very sick and she may die. I would watch her very close but I strongly suggest you have the vet do more tests.
